Five Things Todd Monken Should and Shouldn't Do at Oklahoma State
Todd Monken was recently hired to run one of the nations most prolific offenses, but will he continue the air raid? Should he continue the air raid? Many OSU fans are not pleased with the hire thinking that he will bring the "Power-I back" formation that Les Miles used all the time. Well, here are five things that OSU's Todd Monken should/shouldn't do to OSU's offense.
No. 1: Employ a More Balanced, Multiple Offense
1 of 5
I really liked the pass first offense Holgorsen gave to us, but I would much rather see a balance between Shotgun formations, and Under Center formations. Power running, traditional pass formations, and spreading the field with four WR's and the QB and HB in the gun would be great to see. That would make it harder for defenses to prepare for us.
No. 2: Get The Tight Ends Involved Again
2 of 5
Dana Holgorsen didn't use Tight Ends for his offense, but we have seen great Tight Ends pass through OSU through time, so why not use them? Once again, a good Tight End is just another play maker on the field, and they can create mismatches with the defense.
No. 3: Use All Three of Our Running Backs Instead Of One
3 of 5
OSU seems to have always been "Tailback U" with Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders way back when, and even now with Kendall Hunter. There is also two sophomores in Jeremy Smith and Joseph Randle who look like they will become stars in the future. Incoming freshman Herschel Sims looks to be the same way.
Instead of using one for everything, how about we use all three for specifics? Jeremy Smith is more of a power back, Joseph Randle is speedy and a great receiving back, and Herschel Sims could very well do it all.
No. 4: Don't Try To Be Dana Holgorsen
4 of 5
He's stated before that he can't become Dana Holgorsen because that wouldn't be him, and that's good. As far as I'm concerned, Monken is going to give us a unique balanced offense that can run out of many formations. With Monken having ties to the power running game, I am sure we will see more running plays than last year, which is great because time of possession is also a key in games. If Monken is able to keep our offense on the field longer, then our defense has time to catch their breath.
No. 5: Stay For a While
5 of 5
OSU probably wont be your last place, but hopefully you do stay for a while. Why? To continue giving OSU its offensive identity. Hopefully you have a different kind of success here from what Dana had, but hopefully you are just as productive as Dana was. Many fans here at OSU expect great things of you, and whether they are pleased with your hire or not, many of them just want someone who will stay here for a while, and not pull a one year stint.
