College Football 2011: Which Recruits in Bad Situations Won't Be There Long?

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

Sometimes recruits make choices for the wrong reasons or turn blind to potential problems with their desired school. This can create bad situations where a recruit becomes unhappy, changes positions, quits or transfers.

While this is tough to predict and any player in any class can fall victim to an array of circumstances, we decided to take a stab at a couple players in the 2011 class who may run into problems in the future.

If you, yourself, don't have a problem then read on!

Ole Miss' Receiving Trio Just a Duo?

1 of 6

When National Signing Day came, we saw Houston Nutt grab the top four players in Mississippi in linebacker CJ Johnson and receivers Nick Brassell, Donte Moncrief and Tobias Singleton.

All three receivers come in as big-time talents and are used to having the spotlight. On the depth chart there are only two open starting spots and Moncrief and Brassell are a bit more highly-rated than Singleton is. However, Singleton may be the best deep threat.

Down the road, if the three can't find ways to accept the ball being distributed evenly among them, then chances are one of the trio could become unhappy and opt to rebel against the Rebels.

A.C. Leonard a No-Go In Gainesville?

2 of 6

Leonard is among the most athletic prospects to come into college football in recent times and is slated to play for Florida.

Looking at what Charlie Weis did with the tight end position at Notre Dame, he had big tight ends and mainly used the 6'6", 260-pound Kyle Rudolph as his main guy at the position.

Leonard merely stands 6'1", 230 pounds and could be a tweener-type that gets stuck between tight end and receiver or maybe moves to fullback.

Leonard fit the tight end mold of Urban Meyer's offense in the sense that he's a clone of Aaron Hernandez in size and skill set, but he may not fit with what Weis wants to do at the position.

Did Elam Blind Brisset From Driskel?

3 of 6

You don't get recruited to play major college football if you are afraid to compete for playing time. That's a truth. Yet you still want to get on the field as fast as possible and depth charts usually do play into a player's decision—at least somewhat.

However, Jacoby Brissett chose to go to Florida where the nation's top high school quarterback, Jeff Driskel, is already enrolled and scheduled to participate in spring practices.

Participating in spring ball is usually almost a year's worth of experience in itself, so when Brissett comes to Gainesville in the summer, Driskel will already have had a lot more time in the offense and be settled in at Florida.

Brissett is a top-flight QB, but next year if Driskel beats him out for the starting QB job, he may not like the prospect of sitting on the bench for at least three years.

Raven Not Soaring In College Station?

4 of 6

The Floyd Raven story on National Signing Day was awfully peculiar and I thought Houston Nutt handled it pretty well.

The 6'2", 180-pound defensive back's decision came down to Ole Miss and Texas A&M and he chose the Aggies over the Rebels. His mother wanted to keep him close to home so badly, that she forged his signature and faxed a Letter of Intent to Ole Miss.

Raven eventually cleared everything up and got to sign with A&M, yet his mother is still reportedly heartbroken and trying convince her son to head to Ole Miss.

Could Raven become homesick or finally give into his mother's wish down the road?

No Three-Headed Monster For Auburn?

5 of 6

Auburn has returning freshman all-everything running back Michael Dwyer and incoming running back Quan Bray, among others in a talented running back stable.

Down the rankings of rock toters is Tre Mason, a 5'10", 190-pound back from Park Vista (FL). Dwyer is an every down type of runner with size, speed and strength, while Bray could provide a nice change of pace with his shifty style.

Mason could get lost on the depth chart and see very limited chances, which could prompt a transfer. Auburn had a similar situation a few years back with Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown, Brandon Jacobs and Tre Smith all fighting for carries.

Cardale Sailing Out Of Columbus?

6 of 6

Cardale Jones is a big QB prospect in the 6'4", 230-pound range with all the tools to be successful. He reminds me of a Rocky Hinds or Jason Thomas coming out of high school.

He had offers from a slew of schools, yet chose to head to Ohio State in the end. He's a raw prospect who needs refinement in his drops, ball handling, footwork and consistent accuracy.

Braxton Miller, Kenny Guiton, Justin Siems and Taylor Graham all figure to fight for the starting job in 2012 after Terrelle Pryor leaves. Each of those QBs are a bit more polished than Jones, so where does that leave him? A position change? A transfer?
