Tebow's Stats Low-Gators Still Winning Big

ian HardmanSep 22, 2008

56-10, 26-3, 30-6, and there are still doubters out there that think the gators are not championship material.  Yes Tim Tebow the super sophomore Heisman winner doesn't have a rushing touchdown, and only through for 96 yards against Tennessee.  Look deeper than the stats and all the numbers on the offensive side, and look at Tebow as a quarterback and the defensive/special teams of the gators.  That defense has only given up two touchdowns all year, and only 19 points through three games.  Thats about six points a game.  It's plain and simple-the offense has not had to do as much.  Tebow doesn't need to have 300 yards passing and 5 touchdowns a game becasue the defense can't stop anybody.  Those days are over.  Granted the gators have played against three first year starting quarterbacks, but this defense is older, better, and much more confident.  Brandon James has two punt return touchdowns and is just flat out amazing every time he touches the ball.  Tebow is managing the game instead of putting it on his shoulders and taking complete control.  He is doing exactly what he needs to do.  Move the ball, get first downs, get that offense in position to score, and most importantly-not turning the ball over.  That last point goes along with the whole team-NO TURNOVERS!!  That is being smart and efficient with the ball.  Yes it took until the fourth quarter to get past nine points against Miami, but if it hadn't been for a procedure call on a touchdown pass, Florida would have scored 30 points in that game.  They do need to get more sound on the offensive side of the ball.  But as the season goes on the timing will fix itself.  Moody is coming into his own, Harvin is 100%, and all the other playmakers are using their unbelievable speed to create mis-matches.  I recall something that happened in 2006.  A Florida team that had an awesome front seven and an All-American at safety and on the other side a sputtering offense and that team won a national championship.  Its hard to comprehend that there are doubters about this gator offense who has scored practically 30 points a game.  This offense is a hundred times better than that one was two years ago, and this defense, maybe not as good, is playing with a lot of confidence.  As the SEC schedule starts heating up we will see when that timing comes around, and when it does florida can only get better, and they are pretty darn good now.
