Michigan State Spartans Are Ready to Run the Table, Starting With the Hoosiers

Karl WyattSep 21, 2008

It is Sunday after a big win for the Spartans, and the new rankings have come out. Don't be so disappointed about not making the Top 25; it shouldn't take long. Michigan State proved to us this weekend that they have what it takes to run the table before hosting Ohio State on October 18th.

Okay don't let me get too far ahead of myself.

Let's not get too excited about what this season can turn out to be. Let's just concentrate on the next week, and Indiana.

Michigan State will be visiting an Indiana team that just suffered a 42-20 wallop to Ball St. Indiana went into that game almost untested with a 2-0 record, after beating Western Kentucky and Murray State. But give Ball State credit for their win; they are a good team that is now 4-0 on the season.

There are many things we, as Spartan fans, can take from this game as a positive for next Saturday. Ball State running back MiQuale Lewis ran for 166 yards and 4 touchdowns, and the Hoosiers gave up a total of 224 yard rushing yards.

When your offense contains a player named Javon Ringer, you are going to be happy to find out that your next opponent is struggling to contain the run game.

That is not all though, the Hoosiers gave up more passing yards than rushing at 239. This is good news for Mark Dell, and the Spartans. There is nothing better than being able to establish a run game, and then air out the ball.

The Indiana defensive line is going to expect the ball to go to Javon Ringer every time, and it probably will.  However, the secondary will still have to cover the receivers if they come out with three or four wide, which will open the field up for Javon to run. If those safeties start to get an itch to play closer to the line, Brian Hoyer and Mark Dell will team up to make them pay.

The Spartan defense should eat up the Hoosier offense as well. Indiana has been all about the run game. Yes, they have options in the air, but their numbers have been coming off the ground. The way that Michigan State's defensive line has been gobbling up running backs, they should be able to easily stop the run and force Indiana to air it out.

With the pressure the Spartans have been putting on the quarterback, watch for Otis Wiley and the rest of the secondary to eat up the Hoosier receivers.

I'm looking forward to an easy, high scoring game for the Spartans on Saturday. I don't want to discount the Hoosiers, but it should be more of a warm up game for upcoming Iowa and Northwestern than anything.

My pick is MSU 32-10 (i'm being a little stingy), also a ranking next week if they blow out Indiana, and a few low seeds drop like Fresno at UCLA, TCU at Oklahoma, or  Illinois Penn St.
