College Football: An Early Look at The Michigan Wolverines' 2011 Depth Chart

Joel GreerFeb 5, 2011

The word has been out for a while that new Michigan head coach Brady Hoke promises extensive scheme changes on both sides of the ball. Michigan will run more I-formation power football, while keeping many spread and shotgun tendencies like Hoke’s San Diego State team ran in the Poinsettia Bowl against Navy.

Defensively, Michigan plans on running more 4-3 sets, but don’t rule out the appearance of a nose guard in certain situations.

New defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has had a career loaded with success, most recently with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens. Mattison seems like a good bet to totally rebuild a defense that was basically the worst in the country.

On offense, coordinator Al Borges brings two OC Coach of the Year honors with him. Recently he has made stops at Auburn and the last two seasons with Hoke at San Diego State. He plans to alter the offense enough to enable Denard Robinson to pass for 700 or more yards while running for 700 less.

The following is the projected 3-deep depth chart going into the 2011 season. More than a few freshmen should get extensive playing time.  Especially Matt Wile, who most likely will get an excellent shot at winning both the field goal and kickoff jobs.

Note: Previous starters are indicated in bold. There are 10 returning starters on offense, nine on defense.
