2010-2011 College Basketball: 10 Most Disappointing Teams This Season
The 2010-2011 college basketball season is not yet finished, but some teams have already been major disappointments.
Some of these teams had very high expectations and have come no where near them.
Some had almost no expectations, yet still have found ways to disappoint.
Others were looking to finally get over the hump.
10. Wake Forest Demon Deacons
1 of 10
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons had very low expectations to start the season, but I do not think anyone expected this.
The Demon Deacons are 8-14 and 1-6 in ACC play.
Bad losses to teams like Stetson, Winthrop, UNC-Wilmington, and Presbyterian College have not made Wake fans very happy.
The team hit an all-time low on January 19th against Georgia Tech when they only scored 39 points.
Is it possible this team pulled the trigger too quick when it fired Dino Gaudio?
9. Central Florida Knights
2 of 10
Again, this team did not have big expectations. However, a 14-0 start with a win over then No. 18 Florida got UCF fans very excited about what could be.
Since then, the Knights have lost six in a row and now sit at 14-6 and 1-6 in lowly Conference USA.
Marcus Jordan and Keith Clanton are some very talented players. This team should not be struggling this badly in a down C-USA.
8. Mississippi State Bulldogs
3 of 10
Many experts picked the Bulldogs to win the SEC West at the start of the season.
The Bulldogs now sit at 3-4 in SEC play and just 11-10 overall.
The team has dealt with academic and eligibility issues. Then committed the biggest embarrassment in Hawaii when teammates Renardo Sidney and Elgin Bailey fought in the stands.
Things are a mess in Starkville after having such positive expectations.
7. Vanderbilt Commodores
4 of 10
Vanderbilt did not have the biggest expectations this year, but I guarantee nobody would have predicted the Commodores would be in last place in the SEC East at this point.
The Dores are 3-4 in SEC play so far and their biggest weakness, winning on the road, continues to be an issue.
They even suffered a loss to Arkansas at home.
The SEC East is tight and Vandy could easily get back in it, but they are really digging a hole with a 1-3 record against East opponents.
The talent on this roster should not be having this many losses.
6. Minnesota Golden Gophers
5 of 10
A 5-5 Big 10 record is not terrible, but it is not where Golden Gopher fans thought it would be at this point.
A so-so season added an embarrassment just last night when Minnesota lost to Indiana.
Minnesota fans are hoping that loss does not send the season into a tail spin. With the next two home games against Ohio State and Illinois, the Gophers could kiss any NCAA tournament hopes good-bye with two home losses.
Minnesota fans have been waiting for Tubby Smith to take them to the next step, and it looks it might just be another average season in Minnesota.
5. Gonzaga Bulldogs
6 of 10
Gonzaga has been a mid-major power the last few seasons, but this season has gone down hill in a hurry.
They are 4-3 in the WCC and sit in fourth place.
Their only quality win came against Baylor, and as you will see later in the list, that is not really a quality win anymore.
Factor in losing to Santa Clara and San Francisco, and it looks like the Zags will not be making the tourny this year.
That would be quite the disappointment, considering this team was ranked No. 12 in the nation to start the year.
4. Michigan State Spartans
7 of 10
From No. 2 in the nation to 5-5 in Big 10 play and just 13-9 overall.
The disappointing Spartans season has been a disaster, and now rumors are flying that this team has just given up.
I would not believe those rumors until the effort the Spartans put in last night in a 20 point defeat to lowly Iowa.
Is it possible the great Tom Izzo has actually lost his team?
I would not put the blame on Izzo, but he is definitely in a bad situation right now.
3. Butler Bulldogs
8 of 10
The Bulldogs may have had unfair expectations placed on them with the No. 18 preseason ranking, but their season is still a disappointing one.
The Bulldogs only lost Gordon Hayward from the National Championship runner-up team.
Clearly, Hayward was more important to Butler than anyone could have thought.
The Bulldogs have struggled to a 6-4 conference record in the Horizon League, and a NCAA tournament bid looks to be far off in the distance.
2. Baylor Bears
9 of 10
From preseason No. 14 to a 4-4 Big 12 conference record, coming off a bad loss to Oklahoma.
This team has a lot of talent back from the team that went to the Elite 8 last season. Many thought this team was ready to take-off into a possible Final Four team.
However, the Bears have disappointed and are going to have to fight just to make the NCAA tournament.
Looks like the Lady Bears are Baylor's best shot at a Final Four this season.
1. Kansas State Wildcats
10 of 10
Kansas State was an Elite 8 team last season and returned a lot of talent from that team, including Jacob Pullen. That lead to a preseason ranking of No. 3.
The ranking is gone, and the Wildcats sit at 3-5 in the Big 12 buried at ninth place.
Hard to believe that a team with so much talent and expectations could fall this far. The humiliating loss at Kansas last weekend really showed how bad it has gotten in Manhattan.
The Wildcats need to turn it around in a hurry or risk possibly not even making the tourney.
