Fernando Torres: An Open Letter To You On Behalf Of Liverpool Fans Everywhere

Nick SculleyFeb 2, 2011

Dear El Nino,

Let me begin by saying thank you for everything you have done for the Liverpool Football Club.

Thanks for all the magnificent goals you have scored, thanks for the beautiful combination play between yourself and Steven Gerrard, and thanks for all the joy you brought to the fans during the club's darkest times.

I understand that you felt you needed to leave Anfield to reach your ambition of winning trophies and perhaps you felt you had achieved all you could with the club.

BUT, how could you possibly leave for Chelsea?!?

Throughout your career, you have stated you could never go to Real Madrid due to your allegiance with Atletico Madrid. I understand that the ties you feel with Liverpool are not as strong, but after more than three years on Merseyside, surely you would have more respect for the club and particularly the fans than to move to one of our fiercest rivals.

After all the titanic Premier League battles between the two clubs throughout your time at Liverpool, not to mention Champions League ties, it hurts that you would disrespect the club with such a move.

This is what hurts the most; a move to Italy or Spain, or even to a club like Arsenal, Tottenham or even Manchester City would have been understandable, but Chelsea?

However, you will be happy to hear that Liverpool supporters bounce back quickly and with Kenny Dalglish, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, the future looks bright.

You had the opportunity to work with Kenny Dalglish, arguably Liverpool's greatest ever striker, and in the brief time The King was at the helm, your play had improved noticeably. Not to mention the mouth-watering partnership you surely would have formed with Suarez, but I guess we will never know.

Enjoy your time under Carlo Ancelotti, a pragmatic Italian who has played strictly a 4-3-3 formation this season. This formation typically features Didier Drogba playing centrally, Nicolas Anelka on the right and Florent Malouda on the left.

So where do you fit Fernando? You are arguably a better player than Didier Drogba, but he is their star. More importantly, he has a big ego and is unlikely to sacrifice his game to appease you, and Nicolas Anelka is much in the same vein. Perhaps you can move out to the left and run back hard into defense like you have always done.

That may have been a cheap shot, but I'm attempting to prove a point. At Liverpool, the team formed around you and worked for you.

Look at tonight's clash with Stoke City. Dirk Kuyt was the best player on the pitch playing as a striker. This is his best position, but he moved out to play on the right side of midfield, as it was the best interest of the team and it fit the 4-4-1-1 Rafa Benitez liked to deploy.

But hey, time will tell, and I wish you all the best on Sunday when I'm sure both sides will be looking to make a real statement.

You tormented Chelsea through the years; I can only hope you don't go on to give our defense similar nightmares!

All the best,

An upbeat Liverpool fan
