
Gary Neville Retirement: A Look Back at the Career of the Man United Captain
On February 2, 2011, Manchester United captain Gary Neville announced his retirement following 20 years of service with the Red Devils.
Neville was a player that was loved by Man United fans, but he was despised by opposing fans and players throughout his entire career.

1992: Beginning of Time with Manchester United

In 1992, Gary Neville started his Manchester United career with an appearance in the UEFA Cup against Torpedo Moscow.
Earlier in the year, Neville captained United to the FA Youth Cup over Crystal Palace. United's squad consisted of the likes of David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Keith Gillespie, Robbie Savage and Paul Scholes.
1995: Makes England Debut

Altogether, 1995 turned out to be another year of firsts for Neville.
Neville started in Manchester United's FA Cup final loss to Everton before getting his first ever call-up to England's squad in a friendly against Japan.
1996: First Taste of Success

In 1996, Neville played a major role in United's double-winning season of the Premier League and the FA Cup.
Also, Neville featured for England in Euro 1996 and played in all of England's matches except for their loss to Germany in the semifinal.
1997: First Goal

In 1997, Neville scored the first goal of his career in a 3-3 draw. United went on to win the league again during this season.
1998: First World Cup

Even though United failed to win the league in 1998, Gary Neville was able to continue his play for England by becoming a regular fixture for England in the World Cup.
Neville played in three of England's four matches in France.
1999: Helps Manchester United Win the Treble

Neville helped United in 1999 to an unprecedented treble of the English Premier League, FA Cup and the Champions League.
Altogether, Neville made 54 appearances for United during their amazing campaign.
2002: Injury Prevents Neville from Competing in World Cup

In United's Champions League semifinal matchup against Bayer Leverkusen, Neville broke his metatarsal bone, which ruled him out of his second World Cup.
2004: Third FA Cup and Euro 2004

Neville was able to claim his third and final FA Cup title in a 3-0 win over Milwall, providing an assist in the process to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Neville also featured for England in Euro 2004 before England were eliminated by host Portugal.
2005: Becomes Captain

Following the departure of Roy Keane, Gary Neville took over the captaincy for Manchester United, a title he held until 2010.
2006: Controversy and Titles

Neville was able to win his first trophy as captain in 2006 in a 4-0 Carling Cup final victory over Wigan Athletic.
Neville also got in trouble after Rio Ferdinand scored a last-minute winner at Old Trafford by excessively celebrating in front of the Liverpool supporters.
Neville also featured in his final World Cup for England.
2007: Premier League Title and Injury

Gary Neville was able to win his first ever Premier League title as a captain in 2007, the first of three straight Premier League titles for the Red Devils.
Neville also suffered from a major injury layoff following a collision in a match against Bolton.
2008: Returns in a Limited Role

After a year off, Gary Neville returned for a Champions League quarterfinal match at Old Trafford.
However, Neville started to take a more limited role with the club and was never able to reclaim his spot as a full-time starter.
2009: Recall and More Controversy

After winning his final Premier League title, Neville got a surprise recall for Fabio Capello's squad in World Cup qualifying but never got a chance to play.
Neville also caused more controversy by antagonizing Manchester City fans after Michael Owen scored a late winner in a Manchester Derby.
2010: Flipping the Bird and an Extension of His Career

In a Carling Cup semifinal match, Neville flipped the middle finger at former Manchester United teammate Carlos Tevez after Tevez scored a goal.
Neville also won the final trophy of his career in a 2-1 Carling Cup win over Aston Villa.
At the end of the season, Neville got a one-year contract to play through 2011.
2011: The End

Gary Neville played one final match in 2011 but was surrounded in controversy after taking down West Bromwich's Peter Odemwingie from behind, though nothing was called.
With his skills severely diminished, Neville announced his retirement on February 2, 2011, becoming the first Fergie Fledgling who spent his entire career with Manchester United to retire.
