National Signing Day 2011: The Top 10 Impact Classes

Adam FromalJun 7, 2018

National Signing Day told us where almost every player in the country would be playing college football next season.

Just two players remain undecided at the moment. Cyrus Kouandjio told the world that he'd go to Auburn but after having second thoughts, he waited to send in his letter of intent. For the purposes of this article, we'll assume that he goes to Auburn until it is announced otherwise.

The nation's top overall recruit, Jadeveon Clowney, also has yet to declare and he'll hold off on making his decision until February 14th.

But let's not focus on them. Hundreds of talented football players made their decisions on February 2nd and helped to solidify the recruiting classes of different programs across the country.

When you read through this list, keep in mind that it is not a ranking of the classes from bottom to top. Instead, it's a ranking of which recruiting classes will make the most impact during the upcoming 2011-2012 college football season.

Also note that all rankings come from Scout.com.

10. Oklahoma Sooners

1 of 10

Oklahoma has 18 commitments to this point, four of which are 5-stars and four of which are 4-stars.

With just four players in the top 100, Oklahoma leads off this list and is currently ranked 15th among all the teams in the nation.

The Sooners are expected to be very good next season, but that doesn't mean these incoming freshman won't have a big impact.

Trey Metoyer, the No. 1 wide receiver in the country, will get in on a lot of offensive snaps while Marquis Anderson, Jordan Wade and Jordan Phillips will all help out in filling the gaping hole at defensive tackle.

5-stars: Trey Metoyer (WR), Brandon Williams (RB), Nathan Hughes (DE), Jordan Phillips (DT)

4-stars: Max Stevenson (TE), Frank Shannon (S), Jordan Wade (DT), Dan Tapko (DE)

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

2 of 10

Notre Dame has 23 commitments to this point, four of which are 5-stars and six of which are 4-stars.

The Fighting Irish have five players in the top 100 and the recruiting class is ranked eighth in the country.

Defensive end was the biggest need for this Notre Dame team, but that's no longer the case. Aaron Lynch, Ishaq Williams and Stephon Tuitt are the second, fourth and 10th-ranked defensive ends respectively. All 5-stars, the three of them will be rushing quarterbacks in South Bend during the 2011 season.

5-stars: Ben Koyack (TE), Aaron Lynch (DE), Ishaq Williams (DE), Stephon Tuitt (DE)

4-stars: Troy Niklas (OT), Matt Hegarty (OT), Ellar Hardy (S), Jarrett Grice (OLB), Everett Golson (QB), DaVaris Daniels (WR)

8. USC Trojans

3 of 10

USC has 28 commitments to this point, one of which is a 5-star and 13 of which are 4-stars.

The Trojans have six players in the top 100 and the recruiting class is ranked fourth in the country.

USC needed to improve their offensive line drastically after losing three starters from the 2010-2011 season. That means that Cyrus Hobbi and Aundrey Walker, both 4-star offensive guards, will get a chance to leave an early mark.

And 5-star cornerback De'Anthony Thomas, the No. 1 player at his position, would have gotten a chance to replace Shareece Wright, but instead he decided to go to Oregon. It will be official by midnight, but Thomas did inform Lane Kiffin of his decision earlier on National Signing Day. Fellow 5-star recruit George Farmer should be able to catch a good number of passes from Matt Barkley.

5-stars: George Farmer (WR)

4-stars: Marqise Lee (S), Cyrus Hobbi (OG), Anthony Sarao (MLB), Aundrey Walker (OG), Lamar Dawson (MLB), Max Wittek (QB), Greg Townsend (DE), Cody Kessler (QB), Victor Blackwell (WR), Amir Carlisle (RB), Christian Heyward (DT), Antwaun Woods (DT), Isiah Wiley (S)

7. LSU Tigers

4 of 10

LSU has 23 commitments to this point, four of which are 5-stars and seven of which are 4-stars.

The Tigers have six players in the top 100 and the recruiting class is ranked ninth in the country.

One of the biggest holes on the LSU team was the one left on the offensive line by Joseph Barksdale. Fortunately for the Tigers, No. 2 offensive tackle La'el Collins will do a fantastic job filling it.

Anthony Johnson and Jermauria Rasco will both provide the defensive line with much-needed depth and Trevon Randle will need to step his game up and help replace Kelvin Sheppard.

5-stars: Anthony Johnson (DT), La'el Collins (OT), Jermauria Rasco (DE), Jarvis Landry (WR)

4-stars: Trevon Randle (OLB), Jeremy Hill (RB), David Jenkins (CB), Mickey Johnson (DT), Kenny Hilliard (RB), Odell Beckham (WR), Zach Mettenberger (QB)

6. Georgia Bulldogs

5 of 10

Georgia has 25 commitments to this point, two of which are 5-stars and 11 of which are 4-stars.

The Bulldogs have five players in the top 100 and the recruiting class is ranked sixth in the country.

National Signing Day saw Isaiah Crowell, the No. 1 running back in the country, sign with Georgia and fill one of the biggest holes on this team. Crowell will make an immediate impact and take lots of pressure off Aaron Murray.

Defensive end Ray Drew, tight end Jay Rome and wide receiver Chris Conley will all have chances to contribute sooner rather than later.

The Dream Team is now a reality.

5-stars: Isaiah Crowell (RB), Ray Drew (DE)

4-stars: Jay Rome (TE), Corey Moore (S), Malcolm Mitchell (CB), Christian LeMay (QB), Damian Swann (CB), Amario Herrera (MLB), Nick Marshall (CB), Chris Sanders (S), Watts Dantzler (OT), Zach DeBell (OT), Chris Conley (WR)

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

6 of 10

Alabama has 22 commitments to this point, two of which are 5-stars and 13 of which are 4-stars.

The Crimson Tide have eight players in the top 100 and the recruiting class is ranked seventh in the country.

They missed out on Cyrus Kouandjio, who verbally committed to Auburn, but no letter of intent has been sent so there's still a chance that Kouandjio ends up in Tuscaloosa.

Running back Dee Hart will see some time behind Trent Richardson in 2011 since he is an impressive 4-star back. Offensive lineman Aaron Douglas, another 4-star recruit, will likely get on the field too.

On defense, Quinton Dial will contribute on the defensive line. And 5-star prospects Trey DePriest and Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix, the No. 1 ranked middle linebacker and safety respectively, will get lots of playing time as well.

5-stars: Trey DePriest (MLB), Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix (S)

4-stars: Ryan Kelly (C), Brent Calloway (OLB), Dee Hart (RB), Shannon Brown (MLB), Xzavier Dickson (DE), Jeoffrey Pagan (DE), Marvin Shinn (WR), Jabriel Washington (CB), LaMichael Fanning (DE), Danny Woodson (WR), Bradley Sylve (WR), Quinton Dial (DT), Jesse Williams (DT)

4. Ohio State Buckeyes

7 of 10

Ohio State has 24 commitments to this point, three of which are 5-stars and 12 of which are 4-stars.

The Buckeyes have eight players in the top 100 and the recruiting class is ranked third in the country.

And 4-star defensive tackle Michael Bennett will have a chance to help out in the future, but probably won't get much playing time in the foreseeable future. The same is true of defensive back Doran Grant.

The two players that will have immediate impacts are defensive end Steve Miller and linebacker Curtis Grant, the best player at his position in this year's class. Grant especially has the potential to be an All-American as a freshman.

5-stars: Steve Miller (DE), Curtis Grant (OLB), Braxton Miller (QB)

4-stars: Brian Bobek (C), Ryan Shazier (OLB), Doran Grant (CB), Michael Bennett (DT), Chase Farris (DT), Ron Tanner (S), Nick Vannett (TE), Ken Hayes (DE), Ejuan Price (MLB), Evan Spencer (WR), DerJuan Gambrell (CB), Devin Smith (WR)

3. Texas Longhorns

8 of 10

Texas has 22 commitments to this point, four of which are 5-stars and 11 of which are 4-stars.

The Longhorns have eight players ranked in the top 100 and their recruiting class is ranked fifth in the nation.

Though 5-star running back Malcolm Brown may not immediately be the starter, his impact will be quite significant for a Longhorns offense that struggled immensely during the 2010-2011 campaign. Jaxson Shipley, Jordan's little brother, is a 5-star wide receiver who will catch quite a few passes.

Steve Edmond and Desmond Jackson, 5-stars on the defensive side of the ball, will also be on the field a lot in Austin, Texas.

This class is excellent and will help a whole lot as Texas attempts to turn around its team.

5-stars: Malcolm Brown (RB), Jaxson Shipley (WR), Steve Edmond (MLB), Desmond Jackson (DT)

4-stars: Sedrick Flowers (OG), Josh Turner (CB), Garrett Greenlea (OT), Leroy Scott (CB), Quincy Russell (DT), Cedric Reed (DE), Sheroid Evans (S), Kendall Thompson (OLB), Quandre Diggs (CB), Mykkele Thompson (WR), Miles Onyegbule (WR)

2. Auburn Tigers

9 of 10

Auburn has 25 commitments to this point, three of which are 5-stars and 14 of which are 4-stars, the most of any school in the nation.

The Tigers have just three players in the top 100 but their recruiting class is still ranked first in the country. This is assuming that Cyrus Kouandjio doesn't back down from his verbal commitment.

Kouandjio is the top-ranked offensive tackle in the country and he'll be joined on the offensive line by the top-ranked offensive guard Christian Westerman. Both of them will make an immediate impact for the Tigers.

While 5-star quarterback Kiehl Frazier will have a chance to compete for the quarterback job, he'll have a tough time beating out Barrett Trotter.

Auburn loses enough players from their championship-winning 2010-2011 squad that almost all of their highly-rated prospects should find themselves on the field at some point. Reese Dismukes and Greg Robinson could help on the offensive line and Gabe Wright will do his best Nick Fairley imitation for Auburn.

The list goes on and on.

5-stars: Cyrus Kouandjio (OT), Christian Westerman (OG), Kiehl Frazier (QB)

4-stars: Reese Dismukes (C), Erique Florence (S), Greg Robinson (OG), C.J. Uzomah (TE), Gabe Wright (DT), Justin Garrett (OLB), Brandon Fulse (TE), Jonathan Rose (CB), Kris Frost (OLB), Quan Bray (RB)

1. Florida State Seminoles

10 of 10

Florida State has 28 commitments to this point, five of which are 5-stars and 10 of which are 4-stars.

Each and every one of the 5-stars will be able to contribute sooner rather than later. Karlos Williams, a safety, was the No. 2 player at his position and has a chance to start during 2011. James Wilder will get a chance to play running back, which happens to be the reason he chose Florida State in the first place.

Bobby Hart and Tim Jernigan, both No. 4 ranked tackles that play on opposite sides of the ball, will both help out the Seminoles during their freshman seasons.

The last of the 5-stars is Cornellius Carradine, a defensive end with enough talent to get to the quarterback as soon as the first game starts.

Tight end Nick O'Leary is the No. 3 player at his position and will help E.J. Manuel ease into his role as the unquestioned starting quarterback.

Believe it or not, the list of players that will contribute doesn't stop there. Because of that, the Seminoles earn the top spot on this list.

5-stars: Karlos Williams (S), James Wilder (RB), Bobby Hart (OT), Tim Jernigan (DT), Cornellius Carradine (DE)

4-stars: Nick O'Leary (TE), Nick Waisome (CB), Devonta Freeman (RB), Rashad Greene (WR), Jordan Prestwood (OT), Kelvin Benjamin (WR), Giorgio Newberry (DE), Terrance Smith (DE), Josue Matias (OT), Jacob Fahrenkrug (OG)
