Jadeveon Clowney Announcement: Decision To Wait Good News For LSU?

Brett StephenFeb 2, 2011

Jadeveon Clowney, the nation’s top high school recruit, has delayed his announcement regarding the university that he will be attending.

Rather than make his announcement today, Clowney has elected to wait until February 14th, which also happens to be his birthday and Valentine’s day.

The big question now is which school is going to be shown the love that day.

Most people following his recruiting process assumed that he would choose the South Carolina Gamecocks, his hometown school and one to which he has taken several unofficial visits.

His delayed announcement makes everyone wonder what has changed. Has it been his mind?

LSU fans sure hope so.

The Tigers have signed two top defensive tackles in 2011, Anthony Johnson, the nation’s second-best player and the top ranked defensive tackle and Mickey Johnson, another of the nation’s best defensive tackles.

LSU also has 2010 recruit Ego Furgeson, an elite tackle that gives the Tigers an opportunity to rotate guys on the defensive line with little or no drop-off in production.

The addition of a guy like Clowney would make the Tiger’s defensive line one of, if not the best in the nation.

The SEC has proven in the past decade that dominant defensive linemen are key to making a run at a BCS National Championship.

Marcus Spears, Carlos Dunlap, Glenn Dorsey, Terrance Cody and Nick Fairley all dominated the line of scrimmage and led their teams to BCS championships.

Clowney has an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the elite SEC players, and joining the LSU Tigers would enhance his chances.

Playing alongside the likes of Furgeson, Johnson and Johnson would prevent consistent double teams and allow Clowney to take advantage of his speed and agility to dominate offensive tackles.

LSU would also allow Clowney to make an impact and compete for a championship early in his career, as the Tigers are poised to make a serious national championship run in 2011.

Marquee matchups against Oregon, West Virginia, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas and Florida will provide national television exposure that will ultimately improve his draft status down the road.

If Les Miles can somehow convince Clowney to come down to Baton Rouge, he will give the Tigers three of the top 10 recruits in the nation and put them back into the top three recruiting classes of 2011.
