College Football Rankings: Power Ranking All 120 Coaches for 2011
With the buzz surrounding National Signing Day, it’s only fitting we shift towards the future of college football.
We saw Auburn’s Gene Chizik dominate college football in 2010 with the help of Heisman winner Cam Newton. Without his superstar in 2011, we’re going to see just how good Chizik is as a head coach. Will he be able to take the Tigers back to the BCS National Championship?
Where does Chizik and every other head coach rank as we take a look at all 120 head coaches.

Coaches All-Time Team Record: (10-21)

Coaches All-Time Team Record: (12-13)
79. Mario Cristobal, FIU

Coaches All-Time Team Record: (40-33)
70.-61.
5 of 56
70. Bill Blankenship, Tulsa

Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
69. Pete Lembo, Ball St.

Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)

Coaches All-Time Team Record: (28-45)
67. Bronco Mendenhall, Brigham Young

2010 Team Record: (7-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (56-21)
66. Kevin Sumlin, Houston
Sumlin stumbled last year after starting off strong with Houston. Do not expect Houston to get back to that point but another disappointing year should not happen.
2010 Team Record: (5-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (23-16)
65. Jon Embree, Colorado
Embree will not bring Colorado to the top of its conference, but he should improve the program in 2011 nonetheless. Colorado should quickly move up the middle of the pack and finish third in the Big 12 North Division.
2010 Team Record: (5-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
64. Rich Ellerson, Army
Ellerson is making significant progress with Army. He will once again do so in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (7-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (12-13)
63. Ken Niumatalolo, Navy
Although he has only won one Bowl game with Navy, Niumatalolo has done a great job make sure Navy stays consistent and winning. There is absolutely no reason to expect anything different in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (9-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (27-13)
62. Ruffin McNeil, East Carolina
Although I don’t expect East Carolina to take the top Conference USA East Division spot, I do expect McNeil to make significant strides with East Carolina despite a rough debut season. Even so, East Carolina will stay as the No. 2 team in the division.
2010 Team Record: (6-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (6-7)
61. Paul Pasqualoni, Connecticut
Pasqualoni was poor at Syracuse. It makes you wonder if he should have been hired as the Connecticut coach considering Connecticut just won the Big East. I’ll err on the safe side and expect Connecticut to fall from its perch in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
60.-51.
6 of 56
60. Steve Sarkisian, Washington
Things are going to be tougher in Washington without its star player, Jake Locker, around. We’re going to see just what Steve Sarkisian is made of. I have my doubts if Washington will even match last season.
2010 Team Record: (7-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (12-13)
59. Dave Doeren, Northern Illinois
Doeren finally receives a head coaching opportunity. It must be nice to inherit a first place team in the division with an 11-3 record and undefeated division record. The only other team that could rival Northern Illinois in the conference is Miami (OH). That is unless Doeren bombs…
2010 Team Record: (11-3)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
58. Bill Stewart, West Virginia
West Virginia is making rapid strides. They were dominated in the Champs Sports Bowl against North Carolina State but the team is ready to make a push towards the top of the Big East. I don’t expect it to happen though.
2010 Team Record: (9-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (19-15)
57. Derek Dooley, Tennessee
Dooley won’t achieve much success until Tennessee recruits better talent. Still, Dooley did a fine job in his first season. Expect Tennessee to stay in the middle of the SEC pack.
2010 Team Record: (6-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (28-11)
56. Charlie Strong, Louisville
Charlie Strong did a strong job in his first season with Louisville. Expect him to maintain his output in 2011 with maybe another win to the total but Louisville still needs more talent before making a run at first place in the conference.
2010 Team Record: (7-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (7-6)
55. Joker Phillips, Kentucky
The Joker is not clowning around, he’s trying to bring Kentucky a winning campaign. He was close last season but this team still has some time before they field a winning team. They’ll make a push once again but will fail short.
2010 Team Record: (6-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (6-7)
54. Butch Jones, Cincinnati
Cincinnati was a bottom-dweller in the Big East and will once again fall short of making any type of push. Jones saw success with Central Michigan so it’s only a matter of time before he brings Cincinnati a winning campaign.
2010 Team Record: (4-8)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (4-8)
53. Greg McMackin, Hawaii
McMackin has done a good job in Hawaii but fans are looking for him to take back to the Western Atlantic Conference. Unfortunately, they’ll still fall short to Boise St. and Nevada in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (10-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (23-17)
52. Hugh Freeze, Arkansas St.
Freeze was the offensive coordinator last season and promoted to the head coach position after the team went 4-8. Do not expect the team to make much improvement but at least Freeze knows the team already.
2010 Team Record: (4-8)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
51. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech fell off last season but Johnson did a great job with the team the previous two years. Georgia Tech gets back to where it was next season after stumbling. Paul Johnson has the resume to bring Georgia Tech towards the top in due time.
2010 Team Record: (6-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (26-14)
50. George O'Leary, UCF
7 of 56
Despite his near .500 record, O’Leary has done a great job at Central Florida. His team will once again dominate the East Division in Conference USA. O’Leary has finished first in the division three of the past six years. I expect him to finally do it back-to-back.
2010 Team Record: (11-3)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (45-44)
49. Rocky Long, San Diego St.
8 of 56
Rocky Long has been an average head coach, with a resume just over .500. San Diego St. will hope he can create some magic for the program as they look to continue their 2010 success.
2010 Team Record: (9-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
48. Rick Neuheisel, UCLA
9 of 56
Neuheisel’s Bruins did not fare well in 2010. They ended the season on a three-game losing streak. I expect that streak to continue in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (4-8)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (15-22)
47. Frank Spaziani, Boston College
10 of 56
Spaziani is doing his best to bring Boston College back to quality standards since Matt Ryan left. He did a fine job last season and should continue to improve the program slowly but surely.
2010 Team Record: (7-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (16-11)
46. Todd Graham, Pittsburgh
11 of 56
Pittsburgh had a good 2010 and will look for Graham to bring them to the top of a winnable Big East conference. I think he could very well do it in his first season.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
45. Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech
12 of 56
Tubberville is a fantastic head coach and will shortly bring Texas Tech to prominence. They are in a tough division, but expect Texas Tech to win another Bowl game in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (8-5
44. Al Golden, Miami (FL)
13 of 56
Miami finally makes a change at head coach as they try to bring the program back to respectability. “The U” used to be one of the most dominant programs in sports. It’s a shame what has happened to Miami. Al Golden has his work cut out for him in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (7-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
43. Jeff Tedford, California
14 of 56
Tedford is a great recruit and should continue to produce NFL-ready talent. They lose Cameron Jordan but should weather any storm. Cal had an average 2010 season but should jump towards the middle of the Pac-10.
2010 Team Record: (5-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (72-42)
42. Dabo Swinney, Clemson
15 of 56
Clemson used to be one of the better programs, but they’ve fallen on hard times. Without a lot of great talent, Clemson will continue to be in the middle of the pack.
2010 Team Record: (6-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (19-15)
41. John 'Doc' Holliday, Marshall
16 of 56
Holliday is attempting to bring Marshall back to fruition. The program is still a few years away but Holliday could finally be the right man for the job.
2010 Team Record: (5-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (5-7)
40. Dennis Erickson, Arizona State
17 of 56
Erickson and Arizona State are a good match, considering they’re both .500. Don’t expect much improvement in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (6-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (25-24)
39. Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern
18 of 56
Fitzgerald is having a rather rough career at Northwestern. They still can’t break through and won’t in 2011. The team has yet to win a Bowl game during his tenure. They definitely won’t win one in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (7-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (33-29)
38. Jerry Kill, Minnesota
19 of 56
Minnesota had a terrible season and will look for Jerry Kill to fix all of the problems. This won’t happen in 2011. Expect another disappointing season.
2010 Team Record: (3-9)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (3-9)
37. Mike Stoops, Arizona
20 of 56
Arizona continues to underachieve under Mike Stoops with a 40-45 record. One would think at some point Arizona makes a run. Maybe big brother Bob will give Mike some pointers in the offseason.
2010 Team Record: (5-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (40-45)
36. Dan Mullen, Mississippi St.
21 of 56
Mullen had a fantastic 2010 and will once again improve Mississippi St. Mullen is very good at building his players so improvement will be evident in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (9-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (14-11)
35. Greg Schiano, Rutgers
22 of 56
Schiano has fallen on rough times since losing Ray Rice to the NFL. In the Big East though, Rutgers could quickly make a jump closer to the top in the next few years, starting to make strides in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (4-8)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (59-63)
34. Don Treadwell, Miami (OH)
23 of 56
Treadwell inherits a team that went 10-4. Treadwell was one of the better coordinators in the nation and should see continued success captaining his own ship.
2010 Team Record: (10-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
33. Skip Holtz, USF
24 of 56
USF is a rapidly growing football program. Skip Holtz has the program heading in the right direction. Expect USF to be on the radar next season.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (8-5)
32. Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech
25 of 56
I like what Virginia Tech does just about every season. Frank Beamer has been around for years and knows exactly what it takes to get the job done. He repeatedly produces NFL-ready talent. Va Tech will once again dominate the Atlantic Coast.
2010 Team Record: (13-3)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (198-95-2)
31. Houston Nutt, Mississippi
26 of 56
Ole Miss was down last year but I don’t expect them to repeat despite being in the toughest division in college football. Nutt is building a nice team and barely lost a tight game against Mississippi St. in the college finale. Ole Miss will be back to contention soon, but not next year.
2010 Team Record: (4-8)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (22-16)
30. Will Muschamp, Florida
27 of 56
Muschamp has a lot to live up to after Urban Meyer won two National Championships in Florida. Muschamp has a good defense in Florida but he will need to fix the offense. The Gators struggled mightily in Meyer’s final season. He has a lot of work to do with this team, which might not crack the top 25 in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
29. David Shaw, Stanford
28 of 56
Shaw inherits Jim Harbaugh’s team, which could potentially go undefeated with Andrew Luck, the best quarterback in the nation, leading the team in 2011. Luck stayed in school for his senior year because he knows Stanford has a great chance to play for a National Championship. The only downside to the team is Shaw’s inexperience. I predict he does a great job in his first year, but we still can’t put him much higher until he does something worthy. Shaw has been with the team since 2007, so he knows these players quite well.
2010 Team Record: (12-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
28. Mike Sherman, Texas A&M
29 of 56
It’s tough for any program to lose a player of Von Miller’s caliber. Sherman has had an average run with Texas A&M thus far but won the final six games of 2010 to give Sherman a .500 record.
2010 Team Record: (9-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (19-19)
27. Bobby Petrino, Arkansas
30 of 56
Arkansas looses Ryan Mallett to the NFL, but the Razorbacks will be just fine as usual. Petrino will have this team competing at a high level all year. Arkansas lost a close game to Ohio St. in the Sugar Bowl but they’ll bounce back just fine next year.
2010 Team Record: (10-3)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (23-15)
26. Lane Kiffin, USC
31 of 56
I despise Lane Kiffin but I think he’ll use the negative talk regarding USC to his advantage. His players will play their hearts out as they feel like the world is against them. Much to my disliking, USC could be working its way back towards the top of college football. Matt Barkley should emerge as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (8-5)
25. Kyle Whittingham, Utah
32 of 56
The Utes surprised me last year so they are officially on my radar. If TCU should somehow stumble, Utah is going to be right there to snatch up the Mountain West. They were dominated by Boise St. in the MAACO Bowl, but the team knows they have what it takes to compete for an entire season.
2010 Team Record: (10-3)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (58-20)
24. Jimbo Fisher, Florida St.
33 of 56
Fisher did a great job in his first season with Florida St. Many questioned whether or not Christian Ponder leaving would hinder Fisher’s team, but if the Chick-fil-A Bowl is any indication of things to come, Florida St. is going to once again rival for the top spot in the Atlantic Division behind the efficient EJ Manuel.
2010 Team Record: (10-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (10-4)
23. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa
34 of 56
Iowa is quickly making strides. They showed a great deal of promise last season, outlasting Missouri in the Insight Bowl. Look for Iowa to continue progressing in 2011 and crack the top 15.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (89-60)
22. Mack Brown, Texas
35 of 56
Texas took a huge tumble down the mountain last year, reeling from Alabama’s knockout in the 2009-2010 BCS National Championship. Without superstar Colt McCoy, Brown was lost as the Longhorns fell to the bottom of the Big 12 South Division. I expect Brown to not just make the Longhorns more competitive in 2011, but inching back towards one of the more powerful teams in the nation.
2010 Team Record: (5-7)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (133-34)
21. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame

I’m never one to consider myself a Notre Dame fan, but I like the progress Brian Kelly in 2010. The Fighting Irish finally started to show some fight once again. They have one of the top wide receivers in the nation in Michael Floyd. He’ll show his dominance in 2011 if he can stay healthy. Kelly inches Notre Dame back to respectability.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (8-5)
20. Bo Pelini, Nebraska
37 of 56
Nebraska loses arguably the best cornerback in the nation in Prince Amukamara to the NFL, but this time still has a host of other great prospects lined up. Nebraska will once again fight for a top spot in the Big Ten. Cornhuskers fans should be smiling throughout 2011.
2010 Team Record: (12-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (30-12)
19. Brady Hoke, Michigan
38 of 56
Michigan has been down for so long they are almost a forgotten team now. Brady Hoke starts the Wolverines resurgence in 2011. I believe Michigan has finally found the right man for the job. Denard Robinson has superstar potential at this level of football.
2010 Team Record: (7-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (0-0)
18. Joe Paterno, Penn St.
39 of 56
Joe Pa is still going strong. The mystique will never leave him. His players want to play for him. He continues to turn out smart players, which is something I appreciate each year. I was hoping they’d beat Florida in Outback Bowl but Urban Meyer went out on top. I like this team’s defense and think it can overcome offensive woes. You know his players will give everything they have for the Hall of Famer.
2010 Team Record: (7-6)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (401-135-3)
17. Butch Davis, North Carolina
40 of 56
I like this team each year. NC continues to churn out stud NFL prospects year in, year out. North Carolina might not jump to the top, but they’re going to make a run for the Atlantic Coast - Coastal Division. North Carolina will once again head to another Bowl Game.
2010 Team Record: (8-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (28-23)
16. Chris Ault, Nevada
41 of 56
The Hall of Famer continues to put together one of the most impressive resumes in college football. Nevada once again dominated and should still do so despite the loss of quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Nevada finished the season strong with a win over Boston College in the Fight Hunger Bowl. They’ll rival Boise St. for an undefeated season in the Western Atlantic.
2010 Team Record: (13-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (219-97-1)
15. Mark Richt, Georgia
42 of 56
Georgia had a rough 2010, but Richt has an entire offseason to right the ship, which he should do quickly judging by his track record. The Bulldogs are in the toughest conference but should soon be back to prominence. I could see Georgia taking Florida’s spot in 2011 but still falling short to South Carolina in the SEC East Division.
2010 Team Record: (12-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (96-34)
14. Tom O’Brien, North Carolina St.
43 of 56
In my opinion, one of the better coaches in the nation. I think N.C. State has a good chance to actually rival Florida St. for tops in the Atlantic Division in 2011. His program is starting to come around at N.C. St. after a 9-4 2010 season. Expect to see N.C. State move up the ranks once again.
2010 Team Record: (9-4)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (25-25)
13. Gary Pinkel, Missouri
44 of 56
It is going to be interesting to see how Missouri does without quarterback Blaine Gabbert, but after their 2010 surge, things are looking promising in Missouri. Pinkel has done a solid job during his tenure with Missouri and should keep his team in the top 15 once again.
2010 Team Record: (10-3)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (77-49)
12. Chris Petersen, Boise St.
45 of 56
Boise St. repeatedly gets blamed for its schedule, but I don’t see how that is the head coaches fault. Like TCU, Boise St. has to play who they play. Should they be blamed for dominating? That is what Petersen will have the Broncos do once again in 2011: Dominate.
2010 Team Record: (12-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (61-5)
11. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina
46 of 56
Spurrier takes the progress South Carolina made in 2010 and pulls them closer to the top 10 in 2011. Spurrier is still one of the best coaches in the nation despite a rough 2010 which culminated in a loss to Florida St. in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
2010 Team Record: (9-5)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (44-33)
10. Bret Bielema, Wisconsin
47 of 56
Wisconsin has been on a tear since Bielema took over. They are turning into one of the most powerful teams in the nation. The Badgers could actually crack the top five if everything goes their way in 2011. They had a fantastic 2010 and should not hang their heads on a two-point loss to a good TCU team in the Rose Bowl.
2010 Team Record: (11-2)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (49-16)
9. Mark Dantonio, Michigan St.
48 of 56
Michigan St. came out of nowhere last year and surprised everyone. This year, they’ll be on everyone’s radar. That’s fine. Dantonio has one of the most complete teams in the nation and an excellent defense despite the loss of linebacker Greg Jones. This team is going to be good for years under Dantonio.
2010 Team Record: (11-2)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (33-19)
8. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma St.
49 of 56
Gundy has one of the top quarter-wide receiver tandems in the nation in Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon. These two are going to dominate for another season and will solidify Oklahoma St. as a top 10 team. Oklahoma St. has an offense that will blow away each opposing defense every single week of the season. It’s going to be exciting.
2010 Team Record: (11-2)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (47-29)
7. Gary Patterson, TCU
50 of 56
TCU could very well go undefeated once again, but they’ll be snubbed of a Championship opportunity once again. People will once again question TCU’s schedule. Really though, as long as they’re going undefeated, it’s hard to complain. They can only play who they play…
2010 Team Record: (13-0)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (98-28)
6. Les Miles, LSU
51 of 56
Miles takes LSU towards the top once again and pushes LSU closer towards another Championship. Miles stayed in LSU instead of taking the Michigan job and will show everyone the ship he built is one that will stay afloat for years to come. Miles is 5-for-6 in Bowl games since joining LSU. Expect his sixth victory in 2011.
2010 Team Record: (11-2)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (62-17)
5. Gene Chizik, Auburn
52 of 56
After their dream season, Auburn slips without Cam Newton and Nick Fairley. They still boast one of the most complete teams in the nation, but an undefeated season is out of the question without college’s most physically gifted player. Still, Auburn seems to gets the job done each year. 2011 will be no different.
2010 Team Record: (14-0)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (22-5)
4. Jim Tressel, Ohio St.
53 of 56
Without Terrelle Pryor to open the season due to suspension, we’re going to see once again just how great Tressel is. Tressel weathers the storm and causes many to question Pryor’s talent. The good news for Ohio St. fans is that Tressel has the entire offseason to prepare for Pryor’s absence. I’m not worried and you shouldn’t be either.
2010 Team Record: (12-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (106-22)
3. Nick Saban, Alabama
54 of 56
In my opinion, the best coach in the nation. Alabama stumbled in 2010 but Saban will make sure they’re not down for long, he’s too good for that. Trent Richardson will emerge as one of the top backs in the nation to lead this team to victory after victory. They could potentially go undefeated.
2010 Team Record: (10-3)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (43-11)
2. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
55 of 56
Stoops brings Oklahoma back to the top again, advancing to the BCS National Championship after going undefeated. The Sooners will boast the best all-around team in the nation and could very well challenge Oregon for the No. one spot in the rankings out of the gate.
2010 Team Record: (12-2)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (129-31)
1. Chip Kelly, Oregon
56 of 56
Oregon goes undefeated again, advancing to the BCS National Championship.
This team is still loaded on offense. They’re a resilient team. Although I think the loss of Casey Matthews will hurt, the offense will overcome the weakened defense to take the top spot in the rankings. LaMichael James could very well be the Heisman winner this season with Cam Newton now in the NFL and Andrew Luck without coach Jim Harbaugh.
2010 Team Record: (12-1)
Coaches All-Time Team Record: (22-4)
