Alabama Football Recruiting: What to Expect Today on National Signing Day
Right now, Rivals has Alabama as the No. 1 class and that's the way it should end up by tomorrow.
Here's what to expect and the ramifications:
Isaiah Crowell: Goes to Georgia.
Mark Richt had his butt on the hot seat and had to land him, and he will. Richt did everything but offer Crowell's six-year-old cousin a scholarship, and it paid off.
The move will help cement a very good class for Georgia and may save Richt's job for another year, but it won't make a major difference in getting Georgia near the top spot.
They may finish around fifth in the nation, though.
Jadeveon Clowney: Goes to South Carolina—too much pressure put on him by his mom and others to stay in-state.
He didn't need a school to promote him; he will be a star wherever he goes and would be a first-round pick even if he chose Vanderbilt.
Right now, South Carolina is rated with having the 20th-best class; they could finish 17th.
Clowney won't be a deal-maker for getting them near the top 10.
Cyrus Kouandjio: Goes to Alabama.
This move helps cement Alabama's claim to best recruiting class. It also helps ensure that Auburn won't overtake them.
The Tigers were putting on a late full-court press to get Kouandjio to flip to the Tigers, and though it was a fine try, it didn't work.
Robenson Therezie: Stays with Auburn.
Alabama made a late run at the safety and despite a lot of back and forth from Therezie, he will stay with Auburn.
This will keep Auburn close to a top-five class.
Brent Calloway: Will go to Alabama.
Alabama needs another stud linebacker like Antarctica needs more ice, but they somehow manage to land yet another top linebacker. This eases some of the pain from not landing Clowney.
This move just helps ensure Alabama's lock on the No. 1 ranking.
Nickolas Brassell: Goes to Ole Miss.
Alabama wanted to land this fine young receiver and after he waffled with his early commitment to Mississippi State, it looked possible. Then Houston Nutt put on his recruiting shoes and got busy and nailed most of the good in-state talent with the notion of a Mississippi "Dream Team."
How Nutt managed to beat Mississippi State so badly with such a poor season astounds me, but Brassell should get Ole Miss up to around 17th place overall, while State struggles to make the top 35.
Jeoffrey Pagan: Still almost a coin toss. This big defensive end is enamored with Georgia, but his family would like to see him in crimson.
This is a decision that could still go either way.
If Georgia lands him, it will clearly put them in the top five and should Bama land him, Saban will struggle to find room in the 85-man limit for him, but he'll manage as he always does.
This should only help cement Alabama's top perch.
