Rutgers Football: Scarlet Knights Still Hoping To Land Top 25 Recruiting Class

Jeff KalafaFeb 1, 2011

National Signing Day is Feb 2.  There are going to be the usual amount of last minute surprises, but as it stands now Rutgers' 2011 recruiting class is in or near the nation's Top 30.

As of right now, there are three top recruits who are unsigned and on Rutgers radar.  The Scarlet Knights think they have a good shot at one, a decent shot at two and a long shot at getting commitments from all three.

DT MARQUISE WRIGHT:  Wright is a four-star defensive tackle from nearby Paramus Catholic.  He's got good size at 6'3", 260 pounds to play defensive tackle on the next level.  Wright is listed by "Scouts" as the No. 17 defensive tackle in the nation.

Wright has been courted by the Scarlet Knights for years and he has made it clear he has Rutgers as one of his final choices.  Like Savon Huggins, Wright could likely play immediately.

Rutgers is looking for more run stopping ability in the middle of the line and Wright could be the answer.

Wright is considering a host of schools including North Carolina, Michigan State and now it looks like Notre Dame may have entered the picture.

With the signing on Friday of the coveted Huggins, Rutgers would appear to have one more reason why they think they will get a commitment from Wright.

OT FOU FONOTI:  Fonoti is a 6'5", 290 pound offensive tackle from Cerritos Junior College in Norwalk, California.  It's been reported that he is down to two choices—Rutgers and Michigan State.

Rutgers has been recruiting Fonoti hard and recently hosted him for his official visit. The Scarlet Knights have to be hopeful they can get Fonoti because he took the time to make the 3,000 mile trip to Piscataway, even though rumors swirled that he was somewhat shocked at the cold weather.

With the recent de-commit of highly ranked OT Josue Matias, adding Fonoti to Rutgers' 2011 class could be considered key.  Fonoti holds offers from Michigan State, UCLA, Arizona, Houston and Rutgers.

DT DELVON SIMMONS:  Simmons, the five-star defensive tackle from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, is considered a real long shot for the Scarlet Knights  but it's recently been reported that he has made some indications he is still interested in Rutgers.

Simmons is considered the No. 3 defensive tackle in the country and holds offers from Oregon, USC and North Carolina among others.

Simmons has been described by one USC writer as "raw in talent with an abundance of athleticism and a motor that never stops."   Simmons made an official visit to Rutgers back in September.

At this time it has also been reported that four-star cornerback Lafayette Pitts might be wavering on the "soft verbal" commitment he gave Rutgers earlier last month.

Pitts, the nation's No. 12 cornerback, is still headed to Rutgers, but that could change come signing day.
