Rutgers Football: Scarlet Knights Acquire Top Recruit In NJ With Savon Huggins

John HeinisJan 28, 2011

It is pretty much official: the Rutgers recruiting class of 2011 is the best in the school's history.

Already boasting an impressive lineup of freshmen recruits, Rutgers fans across the nation were shocked when St. Peter's Prep running back Savon Huggins verbally committed to becoming a Scarlet Knight in the fall.

Recruiting analysts have been gushing about Huggins for a while now, calling him the top football recruit in all of New Jersey.

This is the first time in Rutgers history that they have reeled in the top recruit from the garden state.

Huggins is ranked as a four star running back and is considered the seventh rusher overall in his class. Offers were not hard to come by for the high school senior, who had an unbelievable 1,891 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns this past fall. Choices for Huggins included reigning national champions Auburn, Michigan State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, and of course Rutgers.

As Huggins announced a press conference today at 5 pm within the confines of the St. Peter's Prep library, it was widely understood that he had narrowed the decision down to UNC and RU.

He will be heading down the turnpike with current teammate Keith Lumpkin, an offensive lineman who no doubt helped pave the way for Huggins' tremendous senior season.

Lumpkin verbally committed to Rutgers all the way back in September, not leaving any ambiguity to his top college choice.

Rutgers also received a commitment from Woodbridge's Max Isaaka earlier in the day, a four star defensive end.

It goes without saying that Huggins will immediate compete for touches in the Knights backfield, as they never seemed to get the conventional run game going with a banged up Joe Martinek.

Instead, the Rutgers choose to rely on their "WildKnight" formation, with marginal results.  After going 4-8 in a year where the Big East was wide open, there is no question that RU needs to get that run game going again.

With some top offensive line recruits alongside Huggins, it should not be a shock that many RU faithfuls are already comparing Huggins to Baltimore Ravens superstar, and of course former Scarlet Knight, Ray Rice.

Coming into today (January 28th), Rutgers had the 32nd recruiting class in the nation.  While it remains unlikely, there is a chance they could now round out the top 25 after gaining two more four star recruits.
