Blake Griffin: Three Ways To Stop the Walking Sportscenter Top 10 Play

Joye PruittJan 26, 2011

While the "Blake" has been known to be the cause of dropped jaws in arenas everywhere, including a town near you, there have been few who have been able to stop his paint domination.

Only recently was he stopped short in his trek to most double doubles consecutively, but resumed his journey shortly after.

There are a few ways to stop him, in case you were wondering:

1) Control the Boards

Blake Griffin is a supreme athlete, no one can take that away from him. But, if you take away the opportunity for second chance points and guide those numbers towards your favor, your team will be incredibly successful.

His paint presence does not only include those star studded dunks he provides for each morning's highlight reel, but his boards are astounding and even if you have to risk a foul or two, the long term results will be win worthy.

2) Guard him in the Paint

You cannot leave Griffin open under the rim.

Regardless of the perimeter threat, there is no reason why he should be getting wide open looks inches away from the rim. Double teaming has worked in the past, but only when the defenders are agile and athletic enough to defend without fouling.

Since Griffin is so forceful in the low post, he has to be guarded by a player efficient enough block without contact or one who will block so hard as to cause a shake up in his game plan.

3) Do not be in awe

There have been so many times where after Blake has gone up for a dunk and rained two down on his defender's head, said guard has been in awe of his presence and ability.

Wait until after the game to marvel at what just happened above you and recuperate. Assess the situation and inbound the ball, make your way down the court and return the favor.

Keeping up the speed in a game against Blake Griffin and the LA Clippers is a huge factor between a win and a loss.

Understanding that even though this team may be able to outrun you, they cannot out-think you in transition.

Of course, during the game, a player will not be able to snatch up an iPAD and read through these simple steps, but embedding them in your brain will be the first step to stopping the streaking Clippers.
