Texas Longhorns Football: Is Stacy Searels of Georgia a Candidate for OL Coach?

Kris HughesJan 19, 2011

Since Jeff Grimes' decision to stay put with the Auburn Tigers, things have been relatively quiet on the Texas offensive line coaching search front.

A few names have been batted around in recent days, including Arkansas' Chris Klenakis, Boise State's Chris Strausser, Vanderbilt's Herb Hand and most recently current Georgia Bulldog offensive line coach Stacy Searels.

Searels is an intriguing potential candidate for the Longhorns given his recent history in coaching with some of the SEC's most dominant programs.

Searels, a Trion, Georgia native, has spent the last four seasons in Athens as the offensive line and running game coordinator for the Bulldogs.

Prior to Georgia, he was the offensive line coach of the LSU Tigers from 2003-2006, during which time the team won a national title, an SEC title and two SEC East titles. Searels coached three All-Americans during his tenure at LSU and five future NFL offensive linemen.

Another interesting aside is Searels' ties to Auburn, a university that Texas seems to have an apparent fondness for when it comes to coaches. He was a three-year starter for the Tigers during the 1980s, blocking for running back legend Bo Jackson and earning a spot on Auburn's All-1980s team, prior to joining the Auburn staff as a graduate assistant in 1992.

Does Mack Brown see a "Will Muschamp in the making" with Stacy Searels?

The Georgia and Auburn ties certainly suggest that this is a possibility. If he could replicate the success that LSU saw with its dominating offensive lines during the early 2000s, then Mack Brown could be on to something.

Look for Stacy Searels to emerge as a first-tier candidate for the Texas offensive line coaching position in the very near future.
