WPS WNY Flash Agrees to Terms with US U23 Star Midfielder Becky Edwards
Buffalo, NY—The Western New York Flash of Women’s Professional Soccer announced today that they have signed midfielder Becky Edwards for the 2011 season. Edwards, 22, will come to the Flash after a solid rookie season with the WPS Champions, FC Gold Pride.
The Downingtown, PA native made 24 appearances for the Bay Area, starting 20 times and registering a goal and an assist. Edwards gained some real experience in her first season, logging over 1800 minutes in the WPS.
“Becky was integral to the success of the Bay Area this past season in their run to the Championship. She possesses a good understanding of the game and has solid technical abilities. Becky will be an important player for us to help link the game playing in the holding midfield role,” Head Coach Aaran Lines says of Edwards.

A Florida State alum, Edwards captained her team to the Seminole's 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. She was twice named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list (2008, 2009), was recognized as a MAC Hermann trophy finalist following her senior season, and twice earned NCSAA First Team All-American accolades (2008, 2009). Edwards finished her collegiate career with 10 goals and 20 assists and became the first Seminole soccer player to be recognized as an Academic All-American at the national level when she was honored as a third team Academic All-American by CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine in 2009.
The Flash opens their season away at the Boston Breakers on April 17 at 6:00 PM, live on Fox Soccer Channel.
About the WNY Flash
The WNY Flash joined Women’s Professional Soccer as an expansion club in September of 2010, directly following the clubs decisive W-League Championship as the Buffalo Flash in July of 2010. The Flash will play all WPS home games at the Rhinos Stadium in Rochester NY, home to the Rochester Rhinos. The Flash will train out of owner Joe Sahlen’s indoor soccer facility, Sahlen Sports Park, in Elma, NY. The Flash colors are Red, yellow and black, to match the Sahlen entities: Sahlen Packing Co., Sahlen Sports Park, and Team Sahlen racing team.
