If records are anything to go by, there is absolutely no doubt as to whom Liverpool should be looking for as their top target already half way through the transfer window.

It has to be the none other than the man who scored than more than anybody else in Europe, Luis Suarez.

The Ajax hitman, who has scored a mammoth 49 goals last season to be the season's top scorer, has been on the wish list of the major Premier League clubs for quite a long time now.

However, after two moments of madness—firstly in the world cup, where he handled the ball and then in the Eredivisie, when he bit an opposition player—his stock has gone a little low.

Going by a plethora of reports, it now seems that there are only two clubs who are fighting it out for the Uruguayan—namely, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, although sporadically even Arsenal and Manchester United have been linked.

Now with Kenny Dalglish as a caretaker manager, Liverpool FC are considered to be a more unified and rejuvenated outfit at least mentally; even though King Kenny, as he is often called, has ruled out any major over haul, buying a player who has a record of goal scoring like Suarez cannot be considered as a no-goer.

Suarez has so far scored 81 goals for Ajax in 108 appearances for the club, which comes down to something like three goals every four matches! That also takes into consideration his recent dip in form at Ajax, where he hasn't scored for more than a month before the suspension.

Even though Suarez has played as a striker for the Eredivisie giants Harry Redknapp rightly puts it that, Suarez is not an out and out striker but can play in a variety of roles (and has also reportedly compared him with the Manchester City superstar, Carlos Tevez), especially just behind the striker.

Something which could make him a perfect for Fernando Torres if bought.

However, with the Spurs in the race and some reports suggesting the London outfit to be in a pole position, Ajax have seemingly upped the asking price from 17m GBP to 20m GBP, now whether this proves prohibitive to either suitor remains to be seen.

Just in case the Spurs pip the Reds in the race for this hot property from Ajax, Liverpool arealso considered to be after a few more options, namely Romalu Lukaku, Alvaro Negredo and Alex Chamberlain. The latter, though an attacking mid-fielder, is considered to be under close supervision of Liverpool's Director of Football, Damien Comolli.

Reports suggest, Comolli was spotted watching him as recently as yesterday with the 17 year old scoring for Southampton.

A few reports also suggest that another 17 year old, Romelu Lukaku, could be destined for Liverpool by the end of this window. The Belgian sensation has interested Liverpool before and also is subject to interest from clubs as reputed as Real Madrid and Arsenal, but it is the easier access to first team football that could lure the Anderlecht sensation to Anfield.

However, Liverpool could possibly opt for a more experienced option and strong rumors suggest that Sevilla's striking star, Alvaro Negredo is the one more likely to be a transfer target for Liverpool FC. Interestingly, this former Real Madrid striker was also a subject to interest from the Spurs in the summer of 2009.

Now though, it seems Liverpool are the only team linked with the 25 year old who has scored who has netted 16 goals in 47 appearances for Sevilla. With huge experience of playing the La Liga (which is rated higher than Suarez's Eredivisie by UEFA) on his side, and now reportedly rated at 17m GBP by his present club, Negredo may very be Liverpool's much needed striking acquisition this winter window.

It is understood that Kenny Dalglish, who himself scored above a hundred goals (112) for Celtic before joining Liverpool, will also have a say in any possible transfer bid and in the present circumstances.

It looks very much to be a Negredo Vs Suarez for Liverpool's striking spot.
