Michigan Wolverines Football: Is Les Miles the "Best Man" for the Job?

Andrew J. KearneyJan 10, 2011

Les Miles has composed quite a coaching career at LSU.  In six seasons in Baton Rouge, he's 62-17 with one National Title and one SEC Title.  Along the way, he's had an impressive slew of players that have helped raise the bar of Tiger football.  Is Miles about to take his coaching pedigree back to his alma mater in Ann Arbor, Michigan?

Undoubtedly, the Wolverines want a "Michigan Man," who better than Miles right?  They clearly want Miles, and Miles likely wants them as well.

Even before they hired Rich Rodriguez, Miles was an option and was considering leaving LSU and heading up north.  But he was already far too busy preparing LSU for the SEC Title and eventually the BCS National Championship Game.

Miles has already made headlines at LSU but now has the chance of a lifetime to return to his alma mater and re-steer them towards the right path.

Another burning question relates to standout Denard Robinson and his ambitions of potentially transferring out of Michigan.  Would Miles be a reason Robinson stays in hopes of continuing this electric offense?

Miles was a Wolverine under Bo Schembechler back in the 1970s.  Miles bleeds Blue and Maize and could be just what they need to move forward in the future.  Though he's won a National Title, his dream job in Ann Arbor awaits and the possibility of accomplishing even more impressive feats.

Big Blue Nation would back the hiring of a "Michigan Man" like Miles without a doubt. This is something that R-Rod desperately wanted but never achieved.  Michigan would be getting "back to basics" by hiring Miles in hopes of restoring the Wolverines back to supremacy.

Michigan had hopes of hiring an alum ever since they fired Rodriguez.  First, the "hot name" was Stanford's Jim Harbaugh, who recently went to the San Francisco 49ers for $25 million over five seasons.  Their Plan B was LSU's Les Miles.  To our knowledge though, he had already been an option in the past.  The time is right as Miles should jump ship for a lucrative deal in Michigan.

If Miles were to accept this job, he must live with the fact the school is on probation until November 5, 2013.  In addition, their practice time has been reduced by 130 hours by the NCAA after Rodriguez's violations of policy.

This burden should factor into Miles' decision, but ultimately, he will find his way home this winter.
