Brent Calloway Commits to Auburn: What It Means for Auburn Football

Michael PintoJan 8, 2011

Five-star linebacker Brent Calloway, one of the nation's top overall recruits, made a couple of surprise announcements at the 2011 U.S. Army High School Football All-American Bowl on Saturday.

At the start of the game Calloway announced that he was decommitting from Alabama, where he's been a longtime commitment, and would make his decision between Auburn, LSU and USC.

In the fourth quarter of the game, Calloway committed to Auburn, which should add some fire to the annual rivalry between the two Alabama powerhouses.

"I weighed out everything, I talked to the coaches, and I love it there [at Auburn]," Calloway said.

Calloway is a player who won't wow you in drills or in the weight room, but the game film speaks for itself. Some guys are just gamers and he's one of those guys.

The news must come as a big blow to Alabama, with the Crimson Tide having one of the best recruiting classes in the country and counting on Calloway to be a big part of an expected linebacker haul that also includes five-star outside linebacker Trey DePriest.

Alabama isn't used to losing out on prospects, but got a consolation prize with the official word that four-star running back Dee Hart will be definitely be joining the Crimson Tide after he decommitted from Michigan earlier this month and became a soft verbal to Alabama.

As for Auburn, the day was filled with good news, not just that Calloway becomes the school's premier addition to the 2011 recruiting class, but also that four-star athlete Kris Frost announced his commitment to the Tigers as well.

Frost is a difficult prospect to gauge because of his size, 6'3" and 210 lbs. He's played primarily as a linebacker in high school, but has shown solid coverage skills and could be a good candidate to switch over to safety at the next level.

He's a turnover machine who has a knack for big plays and big hits, but might not have the coverage skills and instincts to make it work at the position. On that same note, he needs to bulk up a significant amount to be able to have similar production on the college level.

Frost wants to try his talents out at receiver first though, but that's a decision that will ultimately be left up to the coaching staff, who probably want to see what he can do at outside linebacker opposite Calloway.

Auburn now turns its attention five-star defensive end Ray Drew among several other high profile prospects. Amid arguably the school's best season in history, Auburn is on track to be on of the big late winners in the days leading up to National Signing Day.
