Viliami Moala Commits To Cal Over USC: What It Means For Cal Football

As expected, Grant (CA) DT Viliami Moala committed to Cal over USC, Oregon State, and Oregon. Moala will look for early time and be able to step in and eat blockers upon arrival in Berkley.

Jeff Tedford is known as a offensive coach, but the coup that Moala's pledge is certainly a boost to bolster the Bear's defense.

Moala's Scouting Report

Moala is a 6-2, 330 pound mammoth with great bulk, strength, and power. He can two-gap inside and is an ideal nose tackle or one-technique defensive lineman.

He has the strength to control offensive linemen at the point, and has power to shed. He explodes off the ball and plays his tremendous heart, effort, and a great motor.

Just because Moala is a big interior presence, but don't discount his pass rush ability. A great bull rusher, Moala has the quickness to penetrate gaps and a solid burst to finish on quarterbacks.

He will need to play with better pad level and leverage in college to be more consistent. He also will have to watch his weight, but should actually be able drop some pounds within a college training program.

Other Finalists: USC, Oregon, Oregon State

While Oregon and Oregon State were in the race, this strictly was a two team battle pitting Cal against USC. Moala is related to former USC defensive linemen and Colts defensive tackle Fili Moala.

Yet, Moala's best friend Mustafa Jalil is has been a Cal commit for much of the recruiting cycle, and has been in the big defensive lineman's ear about playing together for the Bears since the start.

Oregon still has a great top-10 type class, while Moala likely would have been the class gem for the Beavers.

What This Means For Cal

There was a time when Cal had the number one ranked defense in the Pac-10 during the 2010 season, yet a blowout at USC exposed Clancy Pendergrasts' system.

Moala will immediately eat blockers and play the run and give the Bears a pocket pusher up the middle.

Cal has a 16 commit class at the moment and Moala is one their top rated pledges. He joins players like Brendon Bigelow, Todd Barr, Jason Gibson, and his close friend Mustafa Jalil in a very talented Cal recruiting class which should finish in the top 20-25.
