Waiver Wire Class in Session: It's Time To Pick Up Ramon Sessions

Justin HasanJan 6, 2011

Daniel Gibson will miss the upcoming Cleveland Cavs’ five-game road trip with a sprained ankle. As we know in the fantasy world, one player’s loss is another player’s gain. So who on Cleveland will step up?

Although Ramon Sessions will likely still come off the bench, he will get a ton of minutes in the backcourt, often playing alongside Mo Williams. His only competition will be undrafted rookie Manny Harris, who has provided limited fantasy value over the course of his short career.

Sessions has been averaging 16 points, seven assists, and six rebounds over the past three games. As an added bonus, he has averaged 5.7 free throw attempts per contest, knocking them down 94 percent of the time.

When given the minutes, Sessions has proved his fantasy relevance. In the 2008-09 season with Milwaukee, Sessions averaged 12.4 points, 5.7 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game despite coming off the bench for 40 of those games. Unfortunately, in 2009-10 and so far this season, he has averaged less than 23 minutes per game, giving him limited opportunity to impress.

With Gibson out and the Cavs in serious need of a scorer, this former Nevada Wolf Pack star will now get his chance to produce. Upcoming games against the weak defenses of Phoenix and Golden State offer the ideal arenas for fantasy players.

Ramon Sessions is owned is less than a quarter of Yahoo leagues and could provide your team with help in points, assists, rebounds and free throw percentage over the next couple of weeks. If Sessions continues to excel, he may overtake Gibson on the Cavs depth chart once Gibson returns to the lineup.
