Texas Longhorns Football: Boise State OC Bryan Harsin Arrives in Austin
As reported by multiple sources, Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin has arrived in Austin, presumably to interview with Mack Brown for the offensive coordinator position with Texas. Or has the interview already occurred? No one seems to be sure.
As previously written here, Harsin was one of the first candidates to be mentioned in rumors to be Greg Davis' replacement upon his firing from the position.
The Boise State offenses under Harsin and current head coach, Chris Petersen, have put up gaudy numbers against opponents over the past few seasons, leading to discussions of the Broncos entering the first-tier of Division I football powers.
Could Mack Brown be looking to make a move to more of a pro-style offense to compliment Garrett Gilbert's strong arm?
If so, Harsin could be a good bet to implement this system. His success with one of this season's Heisman Trophy candidates, Boise quarterback Kellen Moore, is a testament to his ability to shape talented quarterbacks and help them perform to the best of their ability.
Moore was lightly recruited and has turned out to be a very successful collegiate quarterback. If Harsin can work wonders with Moore, could he help Gilbert reach his potential more quickly?
On the flipside, the Texas administration and Mack Brown should carefully consider the level of success (or more appropriately, the lack thereof) of Boise state coaches once they leave the friendly confines of the Smurf Turf. Dan Hawkins' recent firing from Colorado is only the most recent example.
Just as it can be with other similar programs, many have argued that Boise's success comes with a weak schedule and is a result of a gimmicky offensive system which only works with the right players.
Texas football certainly doesn't rely on gimmickry.
Has Bryan Harsin's success been due to his ability as a teacher and leader, or is he a product of a system and the right environment?
That's for Mack Brown to decide, and the rest of us to find out.
