Alabama: Are Others' Bad Bowl Showings and a New Coach Helping Bama Land Picks?
It's not like Nick Saban needs fate to help with recruiting. He and his staff work harder than most and consider that just as important a job as anything else they do. Year in and year out, Saban pulls in top classes through his hard work and simple message.
To most, that message is, I won't tell you why you shouldn't go somewhere else, let me tell you why should go to Alabama.
He only sells Alabama and what they have to offer. He rarely mentions another school and if he does, he doesn't run them down.
But sometimes he does get some help from the negative aspects of things.
Like when a team like Georgia not only has a bad season, but lays an egg in the bowl game too just before the commitments come in.
Then there is the extra boost you get if you bring in a hot coach that recruits both admire and wish to play for.
Saban has pulled this off by hiring Chris Rumph from Clemson, someone that was popular with several recruits that were still sitting on the fence.
One of those such recruits, Xvavier Dickson, the nation's fifth rated defensive end, had considered Georgia but ended up choosing Alabama.
Alabama already had one of the nation's best recruiting classes, and Dickson was simply the star power to put the Tide up near the top.
And if that weren't enough, Jadeveon Clowney has now said that Alabama hiring Rumph was something that certainly spurred his attention. Clowney was also considering South Carolina as a top contender. Will the South Carolina late season meltdown and bowl loss give Bama an even bigger boost on landing the coveted linebacker?
Time will tell.
Phillip Dukes, South Carolina's top defensive end and rated 12th in the country, who could play defensive tackle, developed a great relationship with Rumph and may want to follow him to Alabama.
He has an official visit at Alabama on the 17th. With the Clemson coaching staff falling apart, head coach Dabo Swinney on the hot seat following late season losses and as well as the troubles South Carolina had late, these are just a few examples of how Alabama could further profit.
National Signing Day was already going to be a huge day for Alabama, now it may just get ridiculously so. Other teams having bad season-ending games and the Bama coaching staff having such good relationships sure could help.
