2010-2011 Bowl Schedule: Power Ranking All the Conferences After New Years Bowls
After an exciting New Year's Day of bowl games, including our first taste of the BCS, it's time to start looking at how the conferences stack up.
Every conference has a win so far, but only one conference is undefeated.
How does the Big Ten rank after tough sledding to this point? Do any non-BCS conferences break the top five?
Read on to find out how the conferences rank and let us know what you think.
12. Conference USA
1 of 12
Bowl Record: 2-4
Games Left: none
Best Win: Tulsa 62, Hawaii 35 in Hawaii Bowl
Worst Loss: Army 16, SMU 14 in Armed Forces Bowl
Reason for Ranking: Conference USA's two wins were in the Hawaii Bowl and an ugly Liberty Bowl, with UCF beating Georgia 10-6. Aside from that, C-USA has been outscored 147-86.
11. Mid-American Conference
2 of 12
Bowl Record: 1-2
Games Left: one
Best Win: Northern Illinois 40, Fresno State 17 in Humanitarian Bowl
Worst Loss: FIU 34, Toledo 32 in Little Caesars Bowl
Reason for Ranking: The only thing keeping the MAC out of the bottom spot is the fact that it can still make it to .500 in bowl games with a win in the GoDaddy.com Bowl.
10. Western Athletic Conference
3 of 12
Bowl Record: 1-2
Games Left: one
Best Win: Boise State 26, Utah 3 in Las Vegas Bowl
Worst Loss: Tulsa 62, Hawaii 35 in Hawaii Bowl.
Reason for Ranking: Like the MAC, the WAC still has a chance to reach .500 in the bowls. Hawaii's bowl loss was terrible. The Warriors played at home in the Hawaii Bowl and got beat by a Tulsa team that had no business putting up 62 points.
9. Big Ten Conference
4 of 12
Bowl Record: 2-5
Games Left: one
Best Win: Iowa 27, Missouri 24 in Insight Bowl
Worst Loss: Alabama 49, Michigan State 7 in Capital One Bowl
Reason for Ranking: Oh Big Ten fans, the pain you must be feeling. A few weeks ago you all tried to tell me that you had the best conference in college football. Really? This is the best conference in college football? I'm not seeing it. But hey, at least you guys are adding Nebraska next year. Wait, the Cornhuskers lost too? Oh, sorry Big Ten.
8. Sun Belt Conference
5 of 12
Bowl Record: 2-0
Games Left: one
Best Win: FIU 34, Toledo 32 Little Caesars Bowl
Worst Loss: none
Reason for Ranking: Honestly, neither of the Sun Belt bowl wins were fantastic, but the fact that it is the only unbeaten conference makes it worth being ranked above the disappointing Big Ten.
7. Big 12 Conference
6 of 12
Bowl Record: 3-4
Games Left: one
Best Win: Oklahoma State 36, Arizona 10 in Alamo Bowl
Worst Loss: Illinois 38, Baylor 14 in Texas Bowl
Reason for Ranking: The few wins don't do enough to mask the bad bowl losses this year for the Big 12. All four losses have been bad, including losses by Nebraska and Missouri to unranked teams. The Big 12 could have, and probably should have, been undefeated in the bowl games so far this season, but I guess they didn't get that memo.
6. Atlantic Coast Confernce
7 of 12
Bowl Record: 4-3
Games Left: two
Best Win: NC State 23, West Virginia 7 in Champs Sports Bowls
Worst Loss: Notre Dame 33, Miami (FL) 17 in Sun Bowl
Reason for Ranking: Actually, the ACC has had a fairly impressive showing in the bowls so far this year. Two of the conference's four bowl wins have come against higher ranked opponents. While none of the wins were season-defining, they have a chance to finish the bowl season with six wins in nine games.
5. Independents
8 of 12
Bowl Record: 2-1
Games Left: none
Best Win: Notre Dame 33, Miami (FL) 17
Worst Loss: SDSU 35, Navy 14
Reason for Ranking: The fact that three of the four independent teams were in bowls was impressive enough, but Notre Dame and Army winning their games pushes them into the top five.
4. Mountain West Conference
9 of 12
Bowl Record: 4-1
Games Left: none
Best Win: TCU 21, Wisconsin 19 in Rose Bowl
Worst Loss: Boise State 26, Utah 3 in Las Vegas Bowl
Reason for Ranking: How good has the Mountain West been so far in the bowls? It has outscored its bowl opponents by just seven points. However, the MWC has one of the best records for all of the bowl conferences.
3. Big East Conference
10 of 12
Bowl Record: 3-2
Games Left: one
Best Win: Louisville 31, Southern Miss 28 in Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl
Worst Loss: NC State 23, West Virginia 7 in Champs Sports Bowl
Reason for Ranking: The Big East's ranking has more to do with the showing by UConn in the Fiesta Bowl than anything else. The final score does not tell the whole story. Aside from that game, the Big East has been solid.
2. Pac-10 Conference
11 of 12
Bowl Record: 1-1
Games Left: two
Best Win: Washington 19, Nebraska 7 in Holiday Bowl
Worst Loss: Oklahoma State 36, Arizona 10 in Alamo Bowl
Reason for Ranking: I know that I am going to be called a homer for ranking the Pac-10 this high, but I really think that I will be vindicated when Stanford and Oregon both win their bowl games. Arizona's bowl stinker was the lock of the year, as was Washington's revenge over Nebraska.
1. Southeastern Conference
12 of 12
Bowl Record: 3-3
Games Left: four
Best Win: Alabama 49, Michigan State 7 in Capital One Bowl
Worst Loss: Florida State 26, South Carolina 17
Reason for Ranking: After an 0-3 start in the bowls, the SEC has won three in a row to pull to .500. With four more teams yet to play in bowl games, it seems like a pretty good bet that the SEC will finish with the most wins out of every conference.
