Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s Secret Revealed!

Last week, the top two teams in MLS, the Columbus Crew and the New Englandย Revoultion, met in a match that would be critical to this yearโ€™s race for the Supportersโ€™ Shield. And Guillermo Barros Schelotto, or as I will call him for brevityโ€™s sake โ€œGBSโ€, absolutely embarrassed New England.

He had a goal. He had two assists. He did as he pleased and it seemed to please him greatly. 4-0 was the result.

GBS was, and alwaysย is, the difference for CMB. Heโ€™s got a whopping 18 assists this seasonย now. And six goals to boot.ย In order to lose the MVP race this season, he would have to do something drasticโ€ฆlike Britney Spears.

Heโ€™s the best Argentine soccer player in MLS, which basically means heโ€™s also the best player in MLS. Hey, say what you want about the prose of Jorge Luis Borge, but thoseย guys can really play some soccer. Seriously. Theyโ€™re good.

And heโ€™s one of their best. Ever.ย GBS is the most decorated player in Argentine soccer history. More trophies than Maradona.ย Heโ€™s really that good. Itโ€™s crazy.ย And heโ€™s recently been gracing all of us with his dominance. But no one seems to be noticing. He is certainly notย a sweetheart of the national media.

But GBS is better than Americaโ€™s sweetheart, David Beckham. In fact, itโ€™s not really even that close. But itโ€™s too late for MLS to try to turn people on to GBS.ย MLS is alreadyย all-in onย Becksย despite the factย the โ€œBeckham Balloonโ€ in popularity the leagueย had promisedย proved to be a bag of hot air. He filled the seats in the cities he played in, but the TV audience still wasnโ€™t there.

Meanwhile,ย the playmaker theyย could build the league around (the kind that can get the casual fan to say โ€œwow, what an amazing athletic playโ€, instead of โ€œwow, why do peopleย say soccer is low scoring,ย Beckhamโ€™s Galaxy team is losing by a bakerโ€™s dozenโ€)ย is actuallyย quietly toiling his way to an MVP in Columbus rather than playing in the bright lights of the HDC.

If you watch commercials nowadays (I try not to), you know MLS hasย unfortunately goneย Beckham-or-Bust. While Becks shouldย receive some focus from the leagueย because he freakingย sells their productย to millions of potential fansย and still turns in decent performances (his team sucks, heย does not), the fact Becks has 100 commercials and GBS has none is indicative of MLSโ€™sย overallย strategyโ€”which isย to put flash over substance, andย formulaic play over truly creative soccer.

People like to watch Beckham. But they like to watch good soccer evenย more, and Beckhamโ€™s bunch ainโ€™t playing a lot of good soccer. I say, push GBS on the people. Heโ€™s that good. Itโ€™s like even as he gets older,ย he never gets tired. He is indefatigable. His vision is unparalleled in the league and it always seems likeย he has fresh legs at the start of every second half.

Itโ€™s almost impossible. Like heโ€™d have to be two men to be so good.

Wait a minuteโ€ฆ

GBS has a twin brother he played with professionally in Argentina.

Gustav?

Was that you last week in the second halfย against the Revs?

Itโ€™s official. I need to stop watching The Prestige.
