Bill Stewart and Dana Holgorsen: Here's A Perfect Ending For The Mountaineers

Tom EdringtonDec 28, 2010

Bill Stewart and the West Virginia Mountaineers will take the field tonight in Orlando and face N.C. State in the Champ's Bowl.

Ho hum.

What this game needs is the perfect ending. A huge surprise, the right thing for West Virginia.

Stewart needs to get his guys going one more time and win this game against the Wolfpack. Get that 10th victory of the season. Finish with a 10-3 record.

Now here's the surprise.

Bill Stewart, after the win, should ride off into the Orlando sunset, call it a day, go out a winner, go out a 10-game winner and say, "It's all yours, Dana."

The perfect ending, the perfect surprise.

It would avoid the nonsense of this "coach-in-waiting" scenario that would play out the entire 2011 season. It would put the hat where West Virginia fans apparently want it—on the head of offensive guru Holgorsen.

Yes, it would be a perfect way to leave.

It would let everyone know who is really in charge next season. Who really needs a lame-duck coach and is the Big East ready to go ga-ga over a Bill Stewart Farewell Tour?

If there were to be some shaky moments in 2011, then there would be no need for finger pointing or second guessing or any of that rubbish.

If Holgorsen is the future of this program, then the future should start sooner than later and Stewart should surprise everyone and just hand over the reigns of this blue and gold stagecoach to good ole Dana.

If somehow West Virginia was upset by N.C. State, Stewart should still bow out. There'd be nothing but griping about the loss anyway, and let the new guy come in and say, "Hey, it would have been different with me out there."

Stewart doesn't need another 12 months. What would that accomplish?

If this is to be Holgorsen's team, then turn it over to him sooner rather than later.

The West Virginia fan consensus is that Stewart is not the driver to take this train where it needs to go. Why have another 12 months with the same engineer?

Take off the hat, take off the headset and simply hand it over to THE NEW GUY.

Stewart should simply ride off into the night and make the new guy, THE guy.

Get these Mountaineers going full bore tonight in Orlando.

Make it a game to remember.

"Your Mountaineers have worked just like mine mules in typical West Virginia workmanlike fashion," is what Bill had to say about his boys last week.

If that's the case, those Mountain Mules should take care of business and send Stewart out a winner one last time.

Then he should surprise everyone and walk away.

After all, there's nothing better than a surprise ending—is there?
