8 Bowl Cities That Just Aren't Worth Visiting and Should Lose the Games

Adam FromalDec 27, 2010

With 35 bowl games during the 2010-2011 bowl season, some are bound to be in undesirable locations.

But in a country as big and exciting as our's, each and every one should be in an exciting location. There's more to the the bowl game than just the football. Players and fans alike get to take in the sights and sounds of the city, have a good time in the week leading up to the game and explore.

While some players get to go to California or Atlanta, Georgia, others are stuck going to rather nondescript locations, like the eight ones to follow.

Read on to find out which bowl cities really just aren't worth visiting.

El Paso

1 of 8

The Sun Bowl will be played in El Paso on Friday, December 31st and matches up the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame with the Miami Hurricanes.

El Paso is located in the Lone Star State, or Texas, as you may know it.

Besides going to the football game, this isn't really the ideal way to spend New Year's Eve.

El Paso has a bunch of museums and National Parks in the surrounding area, but there's really not much to the city.

It's even located right next to Juarez, one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Nearly 3,000 people are murdered there per year.

Unless drug-related violence in nearby cities and some museum hopping is your thing, El Paso isn't the place to vacation on the 31st.

Shreveport

2 of 8

The Independence Bowl, where we will see two triple-option offenses collide, takes place in Shreveport, Louisiana. Really now?

The schools become eligible for a bowl game and get to travel to Shreveport. I bet the players are quite happy about that.

If you're going to have a bowl game in Louisiana, please make it in New Orleans.

I guess if you have nothing better to do than go to Shreveport, go enjoy looking at all the Civil War related things in the city.

Detroit

3 of 8

The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl was held in Detroit, Michigan this year and saw Florida International shock Toledo in the closing seconds of the game.

While the game was exciting, the city itself wasn't.

Does anyone really want to travel to Detroit on the day after Christmas?

It's a crime-ridden city known for it's slumping economy and former industrial prowess.

There are better options.

Jacksonville

4 of 8

The Gator Bowl, a matchup between the Michigan Wolverines and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, will take place in Jacksonville, Florida.

Watching Denard Robinson run may be the most entertaining thing.

The river-walks can be fun, but this city, which was once the fastest growing city in the United States, doesn't really have that much to offer.

Stick to tailgating and enjoying the game if you go to Jacksonville.

Mobile

5 of 8

The GoDaddy.com Bowl is in Mobile this year and pits Middle Tennessee against Miami (Ohio).

I drove through Mobile, Alabama over the summer and the two highlights were throwing a frisbee at a gas station while filling up my tank and getting some barbecue, which was delicious.

Besides that, you can check out all the military vehicles and the USS Alabama, but that's about it.

Most people will probably spend more time watching GoDaddy.com commercials on their computers than they will exploring the city.

Birmingham

6 of 8

The BBVA Compass Bowl will be held in Birmingham, Alabama. While visiting the city, Pittsburgh and Kentucky will play each other.

I'm sure Pittsburgh is just thrilled to be going to the "Pittsburgh of the South."

Besides the civil rights sights, there isn't much to attract tourists to Birmingham.

The city is all about industrial work and as a result it doesn't even look that great.

There are so many better options than Birmingham.

Boise

7 of 8

The Humanitarian Bowl, which saw Northern Illinois steamroll Fresno State, was held in Boise, Idaho.

You can go hiking or visit Boise State University and see the smurf turf. That's pretty much it.

If you're feeling extra adventurous, you can even see the state's largest giant sequoia. Yes, that is really one of the tourist attractions.

Get my point?

Albuquerque

8 of 8

The New Mexico Bowl, hosted in Albuquerque, New Mexico, produced a blowout when BYU took down UTEP 52-24.

There is a some cool cultural stuff there, some great hiking opportunities and the Balloon Fiesta.

However, the Balloon Fiesta is held in October, way before the bowl games are being played.

Albuquerque may be an interesting city, but it's not an exciting one.
