Danny FlynnDec 27, 2010

When people look back on the 2010 college football season years from now, the first image that is likely to pop into their minds is that of Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton.

Newton was by far the most polarizing figure of the year as he wowed fans with dazzling play after dazzling play and and willed his team to wins.

The junior signal-caller tread his way through the treacherous waters of scandal only to come out smiling and blowing kisses after leading his team to a perfect regular season and a berth in the BCS National Title Game against Oregon.

For his efforts, Newton took home basically every major honor and award a college player is capable of.

The Heisman winning All-American provided us with some rather breathtaking highlights this season and considering Newton’s history as a phenomenal playmaker, we should hardly be surprised.

Newton has been wowing fans throughout the duration of his football career with great feats of tremendous athleticism.

In honor of his electrifying season, let’s take a video journey through Newton’s career and watch his rise to greatness from his early days as a young high school superstar in Georgia to ultimately stepping foot on stage in New York as the 2010 Heisman Trophy Winner.

He totaled over 5,500 yards during his last two seasons of high school, making him a valuable recruiting commodity as a dual-threat quarterback prospect.

Newton, rated as a four-star prospect, had offers from an abundance of SEC schools but settled on signing with Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators.

Newton was Tim Tebow's primary backup as a true freshman at Florida, and he did get a few rare opportunities to assert his dominance such as this play in a blowout of Tennessee.

It was plays like this that probably still have Urban Meyer contemplating what could have been.

After making the decision to leave the Florida program after his second season amidst legal troubles, Newton found his way to Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas.

It was there where he once again gained back the recruiting fame he had as a vaunted high schooler by leading the Buccaneers to an 11-1 record and the National Junior College Championship in just his first year on the job.

During his one season at Blinn, Newton threw for 2,833 yards and 22 TDs while adding 655 yards and 16 TDs on the ground.

After getting a look at his impressive performance, Newton was rated as one of the country’s top junior college prospects by both Scout and Rivals and received offers from the likes of Mississippi State, Oklahoma and Arizona, but he obviously ended up deciding on Auburn.

Sure Cam Newton had some mighty impressive numbers this season—49 total touchdowns and over 4,000 total yards—but there are just three numbers that matter the most—13-0.

This year, we watched as that big, intriguing 6‘6', 250 lb kid, who looked real impressive during Auburn’s Spring practices, turned his great potential into great production, taking the college football world by storm in the process.

Cam Newton took his play to a level no one could have predicted this year, and Auburn was glad to go along for the ride.

On Jan. 10, we'll get to see how it all ends out in the Arizona desert.

The 2010 Iron Bowl very well could be one of the greatest college football games of this young millennium,  and it’s a contest which ended up cementing Cam Newton’s legacy as one of the best to ever lace up the cleats at the collegiate level.

Down 24-0 on the road in front of a hostile Alabama crowd, Newton and the Tigers were able to stay calm and rally in stunning fashion to walk away with a 28-27 victory.

Newton accounted for all four of his team's touchdowns—three passing, one rushing—and ended up giving us one of the most clutch performances we’ve seen from a college quarterback in quite some time.

As if there was ever any doubt?

After sweeping the College Football Awards Show down in Orlando, Cam Newton made the trip up to New York to collect college football’s ultimate piece of hardware—the Heisman Trophy.

With 729 first place votes, Newton became the 76th Heisman trophy winner and the third Auburn Tiger to bring home the award.

Controversy or not, you can’t deny that Newton’s season was absolutely Heisman-caliber.
