MAACO Bowl Scouting: Brandon Burton vs. Kellen Moore and Boise State
The MAACO Bowl may not get you excited. It is not a catchy name. It is not in a traditional football town. I'm not even sure who or what the sponsor is.
This I do know: The game will feature one first-round draft pick and two second-round receivers who have the talent to excel in the NFL.
Here is a look at the players to watch tonight (December 22nd, 8 pm EST, ESPN).
Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State
1 of 9
Kellen Moore may have been a Heisman Trophy candidate as a junior, but let's make one thing clear: He is not an NFL prospect at quarterback.
Moore lacks the size and arm strength to compete the next level. When comparing him to past college quarterbacks, look at Danny Wuerffel or Major Applewhite for a projection of Moore's NFL prospects.
One hell of a college quarterback, Kellen Moore has one season of football left, and then it is on to coaching.
Titus Young, WR, Boise State
2 of 9
Kellen Moore may not hear his name called on draft weekend, but Titus Young will—and he may not have to wait long to hear it.
Young is a dynamic talent. We hate to admit it, but if he played in the SEC, Young would be a household name.
An undersized, slot-style receiver, Young is also a dangerous return man. Expect a big game tomorrow, but also look for Young to make a name for himself in the offseason.
Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State
3 of 9
We hope to see a few matchups tomorrow night between Pettis and Utah cornerback Brandon Burton. The showdown would feature a top five cornerback versus the NCAA's top slot receiver in Pettis.
As a professional prospect, Pettis is intriguing. He is not a huge player, but he has a Wes Welker-like appeal as a multi-purpose threat at receiver. Put him in the slot, out wide and on special teams. Just let him make plays.
Brandyn Thompson, CB, Boise State
4 of 9
If you like watching for potential late-round sleepers, keep an eye on Thompson. He has the size, speed and experience to make a run at being drafted if he has a solid game tomorrow night.
The momentum Thompson can build in one solid bowl game will only help fuel his offseason success. Currently rated as a late seventh-round pick, Thompson needs a big game tomorrow.
Billy Winn, DT, Boise State
5 of 9
Not much is said about the Boise State defense, but Winn is a budding star.
Only a junior, Winn has caught the eye of 3-4 defense scouts and coaches. At 6'4" and 288 lbs., he has the perfect frame for the three-man front.
Watch him tomorrow night—he is No. 90—and prepare to be impressed.
Nate Potter, OT, Boise State
6 of 9
The best player on the field tomorrow night will be Kellen Moore. The best NFL prospect on the field will be Potter.
A big, agile left tackle, Potter has people remembering Ryan Clady's tenure on smurf turf.
Potter is ideal for the zone blocking scheme run by many teams today. He is currently "on the fence" about entering the 2011 NFL Draft. Should he enter, he would be a first-round pick.
Eddie Wide, RB, Utah
7 of 9
A thousand-yard rusher in 2009, Wide had a down year in 2010 while splitting carries with Matt Asiata.
Wide is the lightning to Asiata's thunder in the Utah offense. He has speed and some agility, but Wide is not a game-breaking running back. He does add value as a receiver.
With Utah's starting quarterback Jordan Wynn out tomorrow night, look for the Utes to lean heavily on the run game.
Matt Asiata, RB, Utah
8 of 9
Asiata is the power in the Utah offense. He is a big body with speed, but his biggest contribution is the tough running he gives them between the tackles.
Asiata is not your traditional big man. He has good hands, can make moves in the open field and is an able blocker.
Keep an eye on this big back. As the Peyton Hillis model becomes more popular, Asiata will see his stock rise.
Brandon Burton, CB, Utah
9 of 9
The Utes do not have much in the way of NFL draft prospects, but in Burton they have their first legitimate first-rounder since Alex Smith was under center.
Burton is a lockdown cover man, and he will be tested tomorrow night. Watch for matchups with Titus Young and/or Austin Pettis.
The TV feed does not show many secondary shots, but this battle will be a focus for everyone tomorrow night and could dictate the outcome of the game.
