BCS National Championship Game: 5 Prop Bets You Should Take

Joe MorganDec 22, 2010

Ever since the No. 1 Auburn Tigers and the No. 2 Oregon Ducks were announced as the two teams that will play for the national title this year, Las Vegas has been busy with bets regarding the game.

The Tigers are currently listed as a three-point favorite to take home the BCS crown, but that spread will likely fluctuate between now and January 10.

While that margin pretty much allows the better to take one team or the other straight up, it gets trickier when it comes to the prop bets.

Here are five prop bets that you should take.

Auburn Will Win The Coin Toss

1 of 5

Since the creation of the stand alone BCS National Championship Game, the SEC has had their conference represented in each of the four games.

And in these four games, the SEC team has won the coin toss three times and lost it just once when the Oklahoma Sooners prevailed and elected to receive against the Florida Gators in 2009.

If history holds, Gene Chizik and Auburn will decide whether they want to kick or receive the opening kickoff in Glendale.

Cecil Newton Will Be Mentioned More Than Darron Thomas

While Darron Thomas has had a stellar season, passing for 2,518 yards and 28 touchdowns, let's not kid ourselves—we all know who's the real star player for the Oregon Ducks.

Heisman Trophy runner-up and Doak Walker Award winner LaMichael James (1,682 rushing yards, 21 touchdowns) has grabbed most of the headlines about the Ducks this season and for good reason.

On the other hand, Cecil Newton has been as hot a college football discussion topic as his son, Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, due to his involvement in the "pay to play" scandal involving Auburn and Mississippi State.

As the game carries on, expect most of filler time to be filled with the commentators' discussion of the Newtons and the severity of the issue of paying college players.

Urban Meyer Will Be Pulling For Oregon

If his voting of Oregon over Auburn as the No. 1 team in the nation and his alleged (though unfounded) involvement in reporting Cam Newton's transgressions weren't enough, his resignation sealed the deal.

Meyer stepped down as Florida's head football coach on the night that Newton won the Davey O'Brien Award and the Maxwell Award and the Gators announced their hiring of Will Muschamp the night of the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

However, Meyer's ire for Auburn isn't exclusively attached to Newton.

In his illustrious six-year career as Florida's head coach, the Tigers were the only SEC team that Meyer failed to defeat, losing to them twice.

Brent Musburger Will Set Single-Game Record For Saying

4 of 5

Play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger, who will be calling this season's BCS National Championship Game with Kirk Herbstreit, has uttered many famous lines in the booth.

Whenever a football player breaks a long run, Musburger will shout, "It's a foot race," one of his most well-known sayings.

There is actually a Brent Musburger drinking game that require participants to down their drinks when Musburger declares a "foot race."

And with two playmaker-heavy teams like Auburn and Oregon, there are bound to be many long runs and breakaway plays from both sides.

Cue Musburger and his wonderful witticisms, which should come early and often in Glendale.

"It's a foot race!"

This'll Be The Highest Scoring BCS Game In University of Phoenix Stadium History

5 of 5

In the five BCS games (four Tostitos Fiesta Bowls and one Tostitos BCS National Championship Game) that have been played at University of Phoenix Stadium, there have been a lot of offensive fireworks.

Teams have combined for an average of 57.6 points per game with the highest-scoring contest (85 points) occurring in Boise State's 43-42 victory against Oklahoma in the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

However, this Auburn-Oregon game is a whole different animal.

The Ducks and the Tigers rank first (49.3 points per game) and sixth (42.7 points per game) nationally in scoring offense, respectively, and with both teams bringing their "A games" to the field, it could be a shootout for the ages.

How does a 92-point championship game sound?
