Best of 2010: Power Ranking the Top 25 NBA Moments of 2010
The 2010-11 NBA season has been a memorable one with only a quarter of the season complete.
With so many great moments already in the books, it certainly raises the anticipation level of the remaining season.
From buzzer beaters, to broken records, to streaks, there have been a number of big moments in the early going.
Whether it was one play, one game or a number of them, which moment stands out above the rest?
25. Chris Bosh Gets a Wake Up Call
1 of 25J.E. Skeets of The Basketball Jones dropped the Chris Bosh theme song, "Like a Bosh", on November 17th.
Well, apparently Bosh caught wind of it before game time because he vented his anger out on the Phoenix Suns that night. He scored 35 points on 12-of-17 shooting while going a perfect 11 for 11 from the line.
Coincidence? I think not.
That sparked a six-game streak of 20-plus points scored for the forward.
24. Shaq Isn't Done Yet
2 of 25At the ripe age of 38, many were quick to write Shaq off as washed up.
Well, the big fella isn't done yet.
He scored 25 points on 9-of-10 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to top off his vintage night.
Yes, it was against the New Jersey Nets, but 25 and 11 is impressive for someone as old as Shaq, no matter the opponent.
23. Landry Fields Goes Off
3 of 25Landry Fields has been a revelation in New York.
In an away game against the Denver Nuggets, Fields showed off his strong rebounding prowess and the hustle that defines his play.
Fields had a memorable night, scoring 21 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, both of which are career highs.
This performance helped Fields win Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for November.
He leads all guards—not just rookies—in rebounding with 7.5 per game.
22. Heat Lose To Mavericks, Call Players Only Meeting
4 of 25The Miami Heat were in bad shape when they faced off against the Dallas Mavericks in a late November game.
The Heat lost three of their last four games and their 11-point loss pushed it to four losses in five games.
After the game ended, the players had a closed-door meeting in which they aired out their grievances. That meeting sparked a turning point for the club.
Miami is currently on a 10-game winning streak and the Heat are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. Nine of their victories have come by double-digits and six by at least 20 points.
21. Kobe Bryant: A Year In Milestones
5 of 25The 2010 campaign has been quiet a year for Kobe Bryant.
Bryant reached the 26,000 career-points plateau and was the youngest to accomplish such a feat.
He also passed John Havlicek to reach 11th place on the career scoring list and he's not quite done just yet. Bryant can close in on the top five of the all-time career scoring list by season's end.
20. Michael Beasley Is Not a Bust
6 of 25On November 10th, Michael Beasley officially removed the bust label.
Facing off against the Sacramento Kings, Beasley scored a career-high 42 points on 17-of-31 shooting.
He followed that game up with five straight 25-plus point performances, just to make sure people weren't calling the game some sort of fluke.
19. Monta Ellis Makes Big Debut
7 of 25Monta Ellis started the 2010-11 NBA season with a bang.
Facing off against the Houston Rockets on October 27th in the Warriors first game of the year, he put on quite the show for the home crowd.
Ellis went off for 46 points on 18-of-24 shooting while sinking 9 of 12 from the charity stripe.
Ellis' 46 helped the Warriors walk away with a thrilling 132-128 win.
18. The Comeback Kids
8 of 25The week starting on November 6th was a memorable one for the Utah Jazz.
Playing against the Los Angeles Clippers, they came back to win the game after trailing by 19 in the second half.
The Jazz continued that trend over the next four games, winning all of the games in similar fashion. Each of those wins came on the road, with two of them coming against Eastern Conference powerhouse teams.
The team was dubbed the Comeback Kids for their efforts.
17. Amar'e Is Streaking
9 of 25Amar'e Stoudemire broke Willie Naulls' franchise record of seven straight 30-plus point games this month.
Not content to simply match the record, Amar'e is building on it now with nine straight games.
However, the most important aspect of all of this is that the Knicks have won eight of the nine games on this streak.
All the questions surrounding Amar'e's ability to thrive without Steve Nash have been emphatically answered.
The Knicks are back.
16. Rajon Rondo Notches Career High
10 of 25Rajon Rondo orchestrated the Celtics offense to near perfection in the team's third game of the season.
Facing off at home against the New York Knicks, Rondo dropped 24 dimes as he masterfully found and created opportunities for his teammates.
Rondo's playmaking abilities helped the Celtics claim a close game that the Celtics won by four points.
15. Timofey Mozgov, Meet Blake Griffin
11 of 25Blake Griffin's debut in the NBA may have been delayed a year, but it was well worth the wait.
Griffin was having a great season. Then November 20th rolled around and he raised it to a phenomenal one.
With the Knicks in town, Griffin went toe-to-toe with Amar'e Stoudemire in what was essentially a dunk contest.
While the Clippers ended up losing, Griffin recorded a career-high 44 points that night and firmly put himself in the driver's seat for Rookie of the Year.
He capped off the night with the leading candidate for dunk of the year after he climbed over Timofey Mozgov and threw the ball into the hoop.
14. George Karl Reaches 1,000
12 of 25Playing in Toronto, the Denver Nuggets finished the game by winning 123-116.
George Karl has joined an elite list of NBA head coaches. He became the seventh coach to win 1,000 career games.
Karl has faced a lot of adversity over the past year, so it was great to see him reach this milestone.
13. John Wall Joins an Exclusive List
13 of 25Everyone knew John Wall was going to be special, but the bar was raised significantly after only his sixth career game in the NBA.
With the Houston Rockets in town, Wall put on a show for D.C. natives. He recorded his first triple-double, scoring 19 points, grabbing 10 boards and dishing out 13 assists.
He's the third-youngest player—LeBron James and Lamar Odom are ahead of him—to get a triple-double, and only four other players—Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Connie Hawkins and Hambone Williams—reached that mark in fewer games.
12. Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers
14 of 25Just after Trail Blazer great, Maurice Lucas, passed away, the Thunder came to town in an emotional game for the franchise.
The Portland Trail Blazers led for three quarters, but the Thunder made a run in the fourth quarter.
With Portland up 100-98, Kevin Durant missed a jumper at the top of the key, but Serge Ibaka tipped the miss in to tie the game.
In overtime, the Thunder edged the Blazers 107-106.
11. Derrick Rose With Ice Water in His Veins
15 of 25With 10.7 seconds remaining, the Chicago Bulls were down by three to the Houston Rockets.
Derrick Rose took the inbounds pass and drove the ball up the court. After losing his dribble near the sidelines, he gets the ball back from Joakim Noah and wraps around to the top of the arc. Rose pulled up for the shot and drilled the three to send the game into overtime.
Rose finished the game with 30 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists that night as he led the Bulls to a 119-116 victory in overtime.
10. Hill To Richardson
16 of 25In the first of many meetings against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Phoenix Suns had a night to remember.
With 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation and the Suns down 97-99, Grant Hill threw a lob up to Jason Richardson as he tipped the ball into the cylinder to send the game into overtime.
The two teams traded buckets in the first overtime and sent the game into a second one. That's when the Suns pulled away, outscoring the Grizzlies 14-9 in the quarter to win the game 123-118.
9. Manu Ginobili For The Win
17 of 25Manu Ginobili is in the midst of a career year and he's helped lead the San Antonio Spurs to the best record in the NBA.
Last night, playing the Milwaukee Bucks at the tail end of a long home stand, the game was tied at 90-90.
Ginobili capped off his 26 point night with a buzzer beater over the outstretched arms of Luc Mbah a Moute.
8. Mo Williams Does Not Fear The Deer
18 of 25Playing in front of the home crowd at Quicken Loans Arena, the Milwaukee Bucks came in and played hard against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The game was tied at 81-81 with seconds remaining on the shot clock.
Mo Williams caught the inbounds pass, isolated against Brandon Jennings and drove to the right side where he took a step-back jumper with less than a second left to win the game.
That shot capped off a 25-point performance for Williams.
7. Derek Fisher Goes Glass
19 of 25Playing against the other Los Angeles team, the Lakers were down 85-86 with 3.1 seconds left in the game.
Fisher caught an inbounds pass near the half-court line and drove the left side. He lifted off near the charity stripe and threw up a scoop-shot layup off the backboard for the win.
6. Rudy Gay Fade Away
20 of 25At home playing the Miami Heat, the Memphis Grizzlies battled them all the way until the final seconds.
Rudy Gay wasn't shooting well, only hitting 4-of-12 shots up until the closing minutes of the game.
However, with the game tied at 95-95, Gay caught a pass from Marc Gasol at the top of the arc and drove just beyond the right side of the basket and drilled a jump shot over LeBron James to win the game.
5. Kevin Love Takes The Crown
21 of 25Kevin Love officially made his mark as the best rebounder in the NBA after a mid-November game against the New York Knicks.
Love finished the game with 31 points and 31 rebounds.
The last time a 30-point, 30-rebound game happened was 28 years ago in 1982.
The last player to do it? Moses Malone.
That's pretty good company for Love to be in.
Move over Dwight Howard, the NBA has a new rebounding king.
4. Thunder at Nets Triple Overtime Thriller
22 of 25On the first day of December, the Thunder visited the New Jersey Nets with Kevin Durant in street clothes.
The game was a battle with the two sides trading baskets for four quarters.
With 1.5 seconds remaining and the Nets down by three, Anthony Morrow caught an inbounds pass near the scorer's table and shot a running three to send the game into overtime.
The two squads continued to trade until the third overtime when Russell Westbrook took over to lead the Thunder to a victory. He fell just short of a triple-double with 38 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists.
3. The Villain Returns
23 of 25After breaking up with Cleveland on National TV and essentially humiliating the city and franchise, LeBron James made his return to Quicken Loans Arena as the most hated man in the NBA.
The intensity and hatred was palpable from the very moment James stepped out on the court. Even his former teammates turned a cold shoulder to James.
However, James had the last laugh as he went off for 38 points, five rebounds and eight assists. James sat out of the fourth quarter and the Heat walked away with a 118-90 point victory.
Time to move on Cleveland.
2. Boston at New York
24 of 25What a game.
Paul Pierce downplayed any notion of a rivalry prior to the game and he was right. The Knicks haven't been relevant for years.
However, it may be brewing now.
In two games between the two teams, a total of six points separated them.
The Knicks led the Celtics all night long, but Boston mounted a furious comeback to tie the game late in the fourth.
Pierce capped it off with a step-back jumper with 0.4 seconds left on the clock.
Amar'e caught the inbounds pass near the top of the arc and launched a buzzer beating three that swished through the net.
However, he got the shot off too late and the Celtics walked away with the win.
1. Paul Millsap Channels His Inner Reggie Miller
25 of 25Paul Millsap only made two three-pointers in his career prior to November 9th. He more than doubled his career high in the closing minute of the game against the Miami Heat.
With just 28 seconds remaining, Millsap scored 11 points to tie the game for the Utah Jazz. The Jazz would go on to win the game in overtime, 116-114.
Milsap's career-high 46 points led the way for the team.
