Bowl Schedule 2010-11: Power Ranking the 25 Worst Teams Receiving Bowl Invites
As we head into the bowl games, some teams were snubbed, and some teams were loved.
Keep in mind this list is in no way saying these teams are necessarily bad; it's simply a ranking of the 25 worst teams that received bowl invites.
Some had easy schedules, some got too much credit for their records, and some simply flopped at the end of the year.
No team has a record better than 9-3, and a lot of so-so 6-6 teams were clumped together.
I'm sure this will lead to some angry fans, but a lot of these teams I think we can all agree certainly aren't powerhouses.
So, without further ado, I give you the 25 Worst Teams Receiving Bowl Invites.
Thanks for reading.
25. North Carolina (7-5)
1 of 25
The North Carolina Tarheels had a highly disappointing season, given where they were ranked coming into the season.
A 7-5 record and a loss to 6-6 Georgia Tech is proof of this.
24. Navy (9-3)
2 of 25
The Midshipmen didn't have the hardest schedule in the world.
The two better teams they did play (Maryland and Air Force) they lost to, and they lost to 3-9 Duke.
23. Fresno State (8-4)
3 of 25
The Bulldogs didn't beat anyone all that good, and they lost to 4-8 Mississippi in the process.
They had close wins over Idaho and Illinois to end the season.
22. Arizona (7-5)
4 of 25
Arizona, despite being ranked at one point in time, lost their last four to close out the season, including against in-state rival, 6-6 Arizona State.
Not a great finish.
21. Ohio (8-4)
5 of 25
Despite winning seven of their last eight games, the Bobcats never really played anyone that great, and they lost to 5-7 Marshall and Kent State in the last game.
20. Miami OH (9-4)
6 of 25
The Redhawks didn't have any big wins; they lost to 4-8 Cincinnati, and they lost to Ohio.
A good record but not a whole lot behind it.
19. Toledo (8-4)
7 of 25
The Rockets didn't have a hard schedule, and they lost to the 3-9 Wyoming Cowboys.
Toledo gave up over 28 points per game despite this schedule.
18. Tulsa (9-3)
8 of 25
Despite winning their last six games, the Golden Hurricane didn't really have that much competition.
The team also lost to 6-6 East Carolina and 7-6 SMU.
However, G.J. Kinne had a good year individually.
17. BYU (6-6)
9 of 25
Despite going only 6-6, the Cougars did have some tough competition and lost to Utah by only one point in the final game of the season.
But their record doesn't really "wow" you.
Quarterback Jake Heaps only had 11 touchdowns to eight interceptions in all 12 games.
16. Tennessee (6-6)
10 of 25
Tennessee didn't exactly have the easiest schedule, but the game the Volunteeers should have won, against 6-6 Georgia, they lost, 41-14.
They also didn't beat anyone spectacular.
15. Clemson (6-6)
11 of 25
Another team with a tough schedule, but the fact is a 6-6 record isn't all that inspiring.
The Tigers were ranked ninth in the nation in points allowed per game but 86th in points scored.
Their lack of offense puts them on this list.
14. Syracuse (7-5)
12 of 25
The Orange lost to 6-6 Louisville and 7-5 Boston College and got blown out by Washington and Pittsburgh.
They scored only 21 points per game this season, good for 99th in the country.
13. South Florida (7-5)
13 of 25
The Bulls lost to to Syracuse, scoring only nine points in the process, and they didn't beat anyone really worth mentioning.
And no, a win versus the Miami Hurricanes this season isn't really worth mentioning.
12. Illinois (6-6)
14 of 25
The Fighting Illini lost to Fresno State and had a bad loss against the 3-9 Minnesota Golden Gophers.
A 6-6 record isn't exactly eye-popping either.
11. Kansas State (7-5)
15 of 25
The Wildcats lost three of their last five games, didn't beat anyone anywhere near being ranked and they lost to 5-7 Colorado.
10. Army (6-6)
16 of 25
Army's losses against Navy and Notre Dame weren't surprising.
Losing 31-17 and 27-3 respectively were.
Army also lost to 4-8 Rutgers, which doesn't help the Black Knights cause.
9. Georgia Tech (6-6)
17 of 25
A 6-6 record, they lost to 3-9 Kansas and 6-6 Georgia, and they got blown out by 6-6 Clemson.
Plus, the Yellow Jackets didn't beat any that good, with maybe an exception in North Carolina.
8. Louisville (6-6)
18 of 25
The Cardinals lost three of their last five games to close the regular season on a down note, and losing to South Florida, Cincinnati and Kentucky can't make them feel all warm inside.
The truth is this team had a chance to be much better than they were, but they simply blew it.
7. SMU (7-6)
19 of 25
The Southern Methodist Mustangs, despite having a winning record, did not play like a winning team.
They lost to Navy, Houston (5-7) and 6-6 UTEP by two touchdowns.
Not to mention, they didn't beat anyone worth noting (except on this list).
Despite some inflated stats, they just weren't that good.
6. Troy (7-5)
20 of 25
In addition to giving up 31 points a game (92nd in the nation), the Trojans also lost to UAB (4-8), Louisiana-Monroe (5-7) and the 6-6 FIU Golden Panthers, 52-35.
The Trojans overall record is the only thing that keeps them from falling into the worst five teams going to a bowl game.
5. Kentucky (6-6)
21 of 25
Kentucky did play against four ranked teams this year, but that does not excuse them.
Simply, because the Wildcats lost to 4-8 Mississippi, 6-6 Georgia and 6-6 Tennessee.
They gave up 28.5 points per game this year.
4. FIU (6-6)
22 of 25
Florida International lost to 4-8 Rutgers, 4-9 Florida Atlantic and 6-6 Middle Tennessee this year.
Couple that with winning against bottom-feeders and you have the No. 4 Golden Panthers.
The Panthers still gave up 26.9 points per game despite having a fairly easy schedule.
Note: This picture of quarterback Wesley Carroll was taken in 2007.
3. East Carolina (6-6)
23 of 25
East Carolina not only came away with a "blah" record, the Pirates also gave away way too much loot this season, losing 76-35 to Navy and 62-38 to the 4-8 Rice Owls.
The Pirates also gave up 43.4 points per game this season despite an easy schedule. That's 118th in the country.
Poor Dominique Davis, he threw for 36 touchdowns, and his team still only went 6-6.
2. UTEP (6-6)
24 of 25
The UTEP Miners never did find gold this season (should have gone to East Carolina).
They lost to 5-7 Houston, 54-24.
They also lost to 4-8 UAB, 4-8 Tulane, 5-7 Marshall and Tulsa to close the season out.
That's just bad.
None of their wins were against respectable teams.
1. Middle Tennessee (6-6)
25 of 25
I'm sorry, when you hand a 1-11 team in Memphis their only win of the season, that qualifies you for the worst team to make a bowl game.
The Blue Raiders not only accomplished that, they also lost to 3-9 North Texas, 3-9 Minnesota and 4-8 Arkansas State, 51-24.
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, congratulations.
