Auburn Football: Better Enjoy Your 15 Minutes of Fame, It's Gone Soon

Larry BurtonDec 13, 2010

Four things moved Auburn football to the pinnacle this year: Cam Newton, Gus Malzahn, 22 seniors and a down Alabama defensive secondary.

Do you really think a father that admitted to pimping his son around like a streetwalker for $200,000 is going to let him turn down millions to stay in college football? Only the dumbest or the most diehard Auburn fans think that could happen.

Gus Malzahn jumps the sinking ship while his iron's still hot and he's in demand, even if it is Vanderbilt that's demanding him. If he gets lucky and gets them in a bowl, maybe he'll jump again.

Yes, I know Auburn will have more seniors next year, but not at the quality level or amount they had this year.

And as for Alabama's defensive secondary woes that cost them the game against Auburn, who knows if Saban will have that fixed by next year, but with three out of four things that got Auburn to the top gone, it won't matter.

They will be left with a rookie quarterback, virtually untested, a shaky defense, a new offensive coordinator tying to install his own system and almost every star stripped from the team.

If that sounds like a recipe for another title run, please take your medication.

Next year, even the schedule won't be as favorable.

This was Auburn's one big glory year, and it will take many more years before they ever see another one like this.

But in the end, just like in matters of love, it's better to have experienced it once and lost it, than never to have experienced it at all.

This was the year of the perfect storm for Auburn football, and just like all storms, they eventually die out.

As someone who has covered the SEC for many years now, it has been entertaining to watch, and I hope all this culminates in another SEC win in the big show.

And next year, it will be entertaining to see they handle the reversal of fortune.
