USC Football Recruiting: One More Verbal and Closing the Book on a Busy Weekend
Those Trojan fans who left for a weekend camping trip will be pleasantly surprised when they return to the news of what was a very busy recruiting period for USC starting on Friday.
That was the night George Farmer Jr., the mega talented 5-star wide receiver, gave the Trojans a verbal acceptance of their long standing scholarship offer.
That alone would give those Trojan fans plenty of reason to celebrate as Farmer is a game changer who will star for years in cardinal and gold.
Then yesterday came news that Isaiah Wiley, a 4-star JC safety from Arizona, also will come out west to play for the Trojans.
Wiley, a 6'1", 188 lb. converted cornerback whose 4.4 speed may get him a long look at his old position, plays ferociously and has great instincts.
As a JC transfer, Wiley is expected to contribute immediately.
If the Trojans recruiting weekend stopped right there, it would be defined as a crowning success.
But there was more.
Late last night came confirmation that J.R. Tavai, a bruising 6'1", 245 lb. running back from Mira Costa High School in California, also has given the Trojans a "soft verbal," according to Scout.com.
Tavai, should he sign, will be given an opportunity to replace Stanley Havili at fullback.
Last week, Tavai was on the USC campus and the coaches liked what they saw, so they offered on the spot even though Tavai is lightly regarded by many recruiting services.
Interestingly, though Tavai doesn't hold any other offers, he still only gave the Trojans a "soft verbal," according to Scout.com.
Tavai, should he accept the scholarship offer, is expected to enroll early, thus saving the Trojans a precious late 2010 scholarship.
Finally, another offer was extended last week and this one went to a JC defensive tackle.
Sylvester Williams, a massive 6'3", 299 lb. interior lineman from Coffeyville JC in Missouri, visited the USC campus two weeks ago and also walked away with an offer.
If Williams accepts the offer, expect him also to enroll early.
Williams holds offers from several other schools, including North Carolina and Oklahoma State, and will provide immediate depth for the Trojans should he accept their offer.
Well, that's it. At least as far as we know.
However, this is only Sunday morning and to say the "book is being closed" on this weekend may be a bit premature.
If so, and if other offers are accepted, I doubt Trojan fans will mind.
And I know Lane Kiffin will be happy to re-open this book as long as needed.
