Florida Gators Football: The Impact of Hiring Will Muschamp As Head Coach
Just days after Florida head coach Urban Meyer resigned, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp decided to vacate his coach-in-waiting position and will take his coaching talents to Gainesville.
According to multiple reports, the former DC under Mack Brown at Texas will take his first career head coaching job after being given the title of future successor to Brown.
For Florida, this could not have worked out any better, naming a head coach just three days after Meyer's resignation, especially one of Muschamp's pedigree.
The hire, however, does come as a surprise because Muschamp was never considered the hot name that Mississippi State's Dan Mullen was at the time of Meyer's resignation.
But what Muschamp brings to Florida is something that AD Jeremy Foley needed to find: a coach with an energetic personality and a playing style to match.
It's unclear whether or not Florida will stay in the spread type of offense, but expect the defense to play a very fast, aggressive style that Muschamp made work in Austin.
Considering the amount of blue-chip prospects waiting in the wings for Florida's defense, thanks in part to their spectacular 2010 recruiting class, Muschamp will be licking his chops to get to the drawing board.
For Muschamp, it is a return to the SEC after two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Auburn from 2006-07.
While he has never been a head coach in his career, his resume has been nothing short of impressive.
Muschamp coached four seasons at LSU as the LB coach and later became the defensive coordinator, and was a part of that 2004 National Championship coaching staff under Nick Saban.
After one year with the Miami Dolphins and two more with Auburn, Muschamp went to Texas and was the key to a strong defensive unit which helped lead the Longhorns to the 2010 BCS National Championship Game.
But after a disappointing 5-7 season in 2010, Muschamp is on his way to Gainesville. Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis also resigned his post, leaving Mack Brown to find two more top assistants.
As for Florida, the Gators will be getting a guy with as much fire and passion as they had with Steve Spurrier back in the 1990s.
This is the type of coach that young players love to play for and will run into a brick wall for.
For those Florida fans that were nervous about recruits leaving for other pastures when Meyer left, those worries should be eased tremendously.
Foley once again was able to make a fantastic decision in prying Muschamp out of Austin to coach the Gators, which is no doubt one of the best coaching jobs in the country.
They can only hope that he has the type of impact on the program that Meyer had when he arrived on the scene.
He certainly has the tools and talent at his disposal to keep the Florida machine rolling.
Optimism definitely could be at a major high in Gainesville, and that is very bad news for the SEC, especially the teams in the East.
