Miami Hurricanes: Who Should Be the Next Head Coach at The U?
Even though Miami has not been a powerhouse in college football of late, coaching the Hurricanes is still a prestigious job. There is a lot of talent on the roster and the ACC could be won by The U as soon as next year. Winning a national title in Coral Gables also is not just a pipe dream.
The Miami Herald has reported that the University of Miami has narrowed its choices down to four coaches. Using that list of coaches, I'll say which one is the best candidate.
Marc Trestman
1 of 4
Marc Trestman is currently the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League and has a lot of connections to the University of Miami. He is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law and was the quarterback coach of Bernie Kosar when Kosar and the 'Canes won the 1983 national championship. He then served as an assistant in the NFL from 1985-2004, returned to college to become the offense coordinator at North Carolina State from 2005-06 and of late has had a lot of success in the CFL.
However, his tenure at NC State was not well regarded, and if a coach from the Canadian Football League is the best guy The U can hire, then the job's prestige has really fallen.
Al Golden

Al Golden is currently the head coach at Temple University and has turned that downtrodden program into a winner in the MAC. He has a bright, young defensive mind and has done a great job at Temple of late. He also has experience in the ACC when he served as defensive coordinator at Virginia from 2001-05.
Golden has done a great job with the Owls the last few years but he has shown some reluctance to take other coaching jobs as he is looking to be the successor to Joe Paterno at Penn State. So there is actually a chance that Golden, although somewhat slim, would actually turn down the job. i don't think he will but the 'Canes do have to be mindful of his desire to coach in Happy Valley.
Randy Edsall
3 of 4
Randy Edsall has shared two Big East titles while coaching the UConn Huskies and this year has them headed to the Fiesta Bowl. Now while UConn really does not deserve to play in the Fiesta Bowl considering the fact that the Big East is an absolute joke, let's not discredit the fact that in 2002 his club was still playing in the FCS.
Edsall's teams play great defense and they always seem to be on an upward trend late in the season. He is a blue collar guy that would bring a lot of physicality to the Hurricanes, which they sorely lack. Whether he could win national titles is uncertain but they would be near the top of the ACC every year.
But there is still one guy that has a big name, has ties to the University of Miami, and could bring national titles to Coral Gables.
Tommy Tuberville

Tommy Tuberville would be a slam dunk A+ hire for the Hurricanes. He served as an assistant for the 'Canes from 1986-1994 and won three national titles. He has had a lot of success everywhere he went, at Ole Miss from 1995-98, at Auburn from 1999-2008 where he led the Tigers to an undefeated season in 2004 and a Sugar Bowl victory, and is now the coach at Texas Tech.
Tuberville has said he is not a candidate for the job but he has interviewed with Miami and his friends say he is interested. Call me crazy but you'd be nuts to turn down the Miami job to stay at Texas Tech. Miami would be able to double his salary from $1.5 million to $3 million and that is a place he could win a national championship at.
Al Golden and Randy Edsall would be good hires, but Tuberville would be an outstanding hire. He has a big name, is a strong recruiter, has had a lot of national success, and had a lot of success as an assistant at The U before. What's not to like?
