BCS Championship Game: Why Oregon-Auburn Won't Live Up to the Hype
When the final BCS rankings came out, the talk immediately began. Oregon vs. Auburn has been the game people have been hoping for and the scoreboard has been fearing. This has classic written all over it right? Well, maybe.
This is a game in which the belief that defenses win championships may go out the window. The focus will strictly be on the offenses in this game, and it could come down to who has the ball last.
While this game features some of the nation's best players, here are some reasons why the BCS Championship will not live up to the pregame hype.
Over 30 Days Between Games
1 of 10
One of the biggest problems with the national championship is the time teams have to wait to take the field (37 days this year). With this amount of time, both of these teams are going to know each other inside and out, which will lead to a tighter game then you may expect.
The other downside to the layoff is that it allows teams to get rusty and lose the momentum they had going for them by the end of the year. With this much time off, expect each team to need a couple drives to hit their stride.
National Stage
2 of 10
Both of these teams are looking to bring home a national title for the first time in a long time, and in Oregon's case, the first time. Over the next 30 days, these teams will hear about how this is the biggest game of their lives. People need to remember these are still kids, and this kind of pressure may prove to be too much for certain players.
The Build-Up Will Be Too Much
3 of 10
Perhaps the most basic reason why this game will not live up to the hype is that it is going to be built up to be something it cannot match. People are already talking about how this will be the best national championship ever, and that is a tall task to live up to.
This will be a great game between two terrific teams, but let the game play out and determine its place in history later.
All the Pressure is on Auburn
4 of 10
Coming into this game, all the experts will be selecting Auburn. This is a perfect situation for the Ducks, since all the pressure will be on Auburn. The Ducks should be able to play free and loose, knowing that not many will expect them to win.
The Cam Newton Effect
5 of 10
Both Auburn and Oregon are going to hear about how great Cam Newton is during this 37-day wait. This may have a two-fold effect. First, it could lead to Newton coming out and feeling like he has to live up to the hype created around him, and it also may give the Oregon defense fuel to prove that they can contain and even stop the great Cam Newton.
The Auburn Secondary
6 of 10
Oregon's defense will have their hands full with Cam Newton, but the Auburn secondary will be in the crosshairs of Darron Thomas. Throughout the year, the Auburn secondary was susceptible to the pass and ranked among the worst in the nation.
Odds are, Auburn will be loading up to stop the Ducks rushing attack, leaving the secondary in man to man coverage. If Thomas is able to hit his receivers early, it could be a long day for Tiger fans.
Ducks Seeking Redemption
7 of 10
One thing that isn't being talked about is that this Ducks team has been on a mission all year. Many players have returned from last year's squad and are looking to redeem themselves from last year's Rose Bowl.
While the Rose Bowl was closer than many give credit for it being, the Oregon offense believes it was never able to showcase its talents and show the nation what it can do. Coming into the national championship, the Ducks will be looking to show how good they truly are.
Chip Kelly
8 of 10
Chip Kelly is one of the brightest minds in the nation and has proved it since he arrived in Eugene in 2007. While a downside to this game is the long wait, Duck fans have to be excited that Kelly has over a month to figure out how to keep the Auburn defense off balance.
Much like the team, Kelly was embarrassed by the performance of his offense in the Rose Bowl. This is a chance for Kelly to even his bowl record and deliver the school's first title.
Speed Kills
9 of 10
For years, people talked about how the SEC speed killed teams in bowl games, and more specifically, the national championship. This year, the speed advantage will be favoring the team from the Pac-10.
The strength of Oregon all year has been the speed it has all over the field. While Auburn is a bigger team, Oregon has the speed to wear down teams and will look to do what it has done all year, which is keep it close early and blow it open in the second half.
Too Much Oregon Depth
10 of 10
Not only does Oregon kill you with speed, the reason they are able to wear teams down is their depth on both sides of the ball. Oregon remains fresh throughout the entire 60 minutes because it is continuously rotating players in and out, while other teams are relying on their starters to keep up with the Ducks' pace.
The Ducks' depth have should allow them to lean on Auburn and eventually push them over. When that happens, there will be no stopping the Ducks' offense or defense.
