Top Five Clever Topics For So Very Clever Guy's Girls Regarding Bowl Season
Wow, I learned something new today, Clever Girls, and I wanted to impart it to you because these topics are going to come up sooner than later. I am barely going to be able to keep my Top Five to Five this week because there is SOOOO much going on in college football. We’ve got the BCS bowl games, head coaches stepping down, “resignations," hot topics regarding who will go where and, of course, WHO will win the Heisman this weekend. If you've been reading www.soveryclever.com, you already know the answer to that question and should be able to keep up with any Clever Guy on the subject of Cam Newton, his scandal and the Heisman. If not, it's not too late.
Urban Meyer Steps Down: Four Million Bucks a Year Worth of Weird
1 of 6
Let’s get started with a shocking step down by Urban Meyer, the coach for the Florida Gators. Makes me wonder if the s*%t is about to hit Florida in the Cam Newton scandal. For Clever Girls who do not know this, Cam Newton played backup to Heisman winner Tim Tebow for two years before making a break for a pay-for-play option somewhere else. Allegedly.
This makes me wonder, other than the academic fraud scandals involving Cam Newton at Florida, is there something we are missing that would cause one of the most well-known and well-paid college football coaches to step down to spend more time with family? That is more than $4 million per year, by the way.
In my book, $4 million can buy a LOT of family togetherness and experience.
Does RichRod's Job Hinge on Jim Harbaugh's Interest? For Now It Does
2 of 6
When will RichRod get fired? Clever Girls, I am referring to the current University of Michigan coach and my theories for his tenure. He has one year left on his contract and I believe UM is looking to hire a career guy- yes, one like they had in Gary Moeller, whom they let go over a drunken disorderly charge. On the landscape of poor behavior plaguing sports, I have no doubt UM regrets deeply this knee jerk response. He was fantastic and a career coach. So tired am I of the hired guns of coaching. Barf.
So, what does this next year look like? Sadly it hinges on one man and his name is Jim Harbaugh. Jim was a quarterback for UM in the mid-80s. He did a good job, was drafted to Chicago, where his ego took a beating when then coach Mike Ditka publicly dressed him down on the sidelines. This vociferous castigation took place during the game and was widely publicized.
I never really thought Jim got his feet under him again until he became “Captain Comeback” with the Colts. He ended his career in the NFL with the Ravens- a team now coached by his brother. He did a couple of assistant stints and has now landed the dream job at Stanford as head coach. His ego bolstered by this position, he made some unkind remarks about his Alma mater and created some negative feelings in those of us who are TRUE fans of the maize and blue.
Those of us who took exception are now faced with a startling reality- all seems to be forgiven and Jim Harbaugh is being courted. What does that mean? More power for Jim. If he declines an offer this year, UM might give RichRod the last year of his contract and wait for Jim to move north. This opportunity will not last longer than one calendar year for Jim Harbaugh. They might wait a year, but it won’t be any longer. When RichRod’s contract expires, they will hire someone who WANTS to be there for a long time. Where is Gary Moeller?
And the Heisman Goes to Scam Newton—I Mean, Cam Newton
3 of 6
Who is going to win the Heisman? I don’t know who is in charge of Hazmat, but someone managed to clear up to a sufficient degree the controversy ballooning around Cam Newton. He will win the Heisman with NO competition now that he has been cleared by the NCAA of having any knowledge of the “pay to play” allegations. Clever Girls- his father asked the staff of Mississippi State to pay him $180,000 to secure a commitment from his son. Do I believe Cam didn’t know? NO.
I don’t have a Heisman vote (not sure why), so it really doesn’t matter what I think. The committee believes the issue of integrity has been cleared up. I however feel that where there is smoke, there is fire. He cheated twice at Florida, he was arrested for stealing a laptop in Florida and now we are to believe his hands were not in this? NOT buying it. Not even for a dollar.
I hope they continue to investigate, which will only mean that ultimately the Heisman will be returned to the Heisman Trophy Trust for the second year in a row. I wonder when the committee might find it embarrassing to have blanks in such a venerated annal.
Nick Saban Is the Highest Paid College Football Coach
4 of 6
I had long thought Mack Brown was the highest paid college football coach- WRONG. While his compensation is mind boggling- $5.1 million a year- Nick Saban is $5.9 million! Clever Girls- this guy is the ultimate hired gun- he has NO problem doing the wrong thing every time.
He left my alma mater for LSU before they even played their bowl game- totally tacky. He did great things for LSU before leaving them unceremoniously for a head coaching position at Miami. I can’t say I was unhappy he did poorly and it only lasted for two years before he went back to the college scene and is now at the helm of the ship riding the Crimson Tide. He’s good at what he does- he just doesn’t seem to emotionally invest in his team, simply himself.
Clever Girls, I can almost guarantee the guys are going to get this wrong, so it would be interesting to casually mention, "I can't believe Nick Saban makes more than Mack Brown." (By the way, Mack Brown is the head coach at the University of Texas).
This proves your knowledge and they may challenge you, at which point, you don't argue, you say, "Oh, I read it on Bleacher Report." This is a sexy statement to a man. YOU read it on Bleacher Report. This shows an interest in sports. Dudes dig it.
The Bowl Games
5 of 6
OK, BCS bowl games. Clever Girls- we talked about the BCS before- it stands for the Bowl Championship Series. This committee is responsible for placing the top 10 college football teams from the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision. All any of this really means is POLITICS. When these bowl games are announced, there is a collective “ARRGGGGGG” though out the land of fans who feel their teams were denied their rightful place.
Clever Girls, the bowls are ones you recognize likely: Rose, Fiesta, Orange and Sugar, then there is the BCS National Championship. Who is going where this year?
The Rose Bowl will feature Wisconsin and TCU at 5 p.m.New Year's Day.
The Fiesta Bowl will be Oklahoma vs. Connecticut at 8:30 p.m. New Year's Day.
The Orange Bowl will have Virginia Tech vs. Stanford at 8 p.m. January 3, and the Sugar Bowl will be Arkansas vs. Ohio State at 8 p.m. January 4.
The National Championship will be Auburn vs. Oregon at 8 p.m. January 10.
The reason I bring up the bowl games other than the fact you should know who is playing what, where and when- this is a courtesy to you. It tells you WHEN you should make plans for SURE. Do not ask or guilt your men into forgoing the most exciting weeks of college football. If you even consider it, you are not CLEVER.
