Kansas City Chiefs: Will the Real Chris Chambers Please Stand Up?

Ron TepperDec 9, 2010

This is an exciting time of the year for Chiefs fans and I am certainly a diehard.

There is an excellent chance that the Chiefs just might win the AFC West this year—with a little luck.

For a team with such high expectations I'm quite angry that two players, who could help put them over the top, have done little to nothing in helping the Chiefs get to where they are today.

Those players are Chris Chambers and Tyson Jackson.

I have to admit I was wrong, as I am sure Jim Atkins knows. I screamed all summer that Chambers should be re-signed.

Well, they did and are now paying the price.

Chambers was originally cut by San Diego last year for two main reasons; depth and contract.

He was always a big play threat ever since coming out of Wisconsin years ago. Upon coming to Kansas City very few expected much from him, but he was truly their big play maker. In his short time with the Chiefs he caught 36 passes at 17.0 yards per catch.

Little did we know, he was just playing for a contract.

He pulled that same trick just years before. The Chiefs signed him to a $15 Million extension with $6 Million Guaranteed. Some say it may have been as high as nine.

This year Chambers has done nothing to help the Chiefs. He has caught only 15 passes at a pathetic average of 9.4 yards per catch with one touchdown.

He is now demoted, losing his spot to an undrafted rookie.

In all fairness he did fracture a finger early on but their is no excuse for his poor play.

And then we have Tyson Jackson. When Jackson was drafted in 2009 as the third pick in the draft many felt he was a reach—A reach is putting it mildly.

So far he has shown only mid-round production; if that.

His stats for two years includes 55 tackles NO quarterback sacks as a pro and has been outplayed by journeyman Sean Smith.

Now of course, he wasn't drafted because of his ability to rush the passer. He was drafted to stuff the run and occupy blockers but he has done little in that area either.

No one can say "give him time", after all it took Glenn Dorsey a few years to reach his potential but Jackson is no Dorsey.

Dorsey is a warrior who gives 100 percent on every play. Jackson is a hot and cold player who just goes through the motions. That won't cut it. Even Jackson himself admits that he can't grasp the mental aspects of the game or the technique that is required at the Pro level.

At least I applaud his honesty. But that contract? $31 Million Guaranteed. Add on Chambers bonus and the Chiefs have guaranteed $40 Million for practically nothing!

I hate to even mention the players they could have drafted. Brian Orakpo to help that pass rush. Michael Crabtree or any WR, for that matter, in the entire 2009 Draft—I shudder to think.

Despite it all, the Chiefs have had a great year, but it could be a truly "special" year if these two contributed anything at all.

Its crunch time now guys. The time for being dead weight is over. Contribute or don't even bother to dress.
