Urban Meyer Resigns: What Does Meyer Leaving Florida Mean for NFL?
Urban Meyer resigns from the University of Florida after his Gators finished the regular season unranked, and second in the SEC West with a 7-5 overall record.
The news comes less than one month before his Gators are set to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day, although Meyer has said he'll coach the team in the bowl game.
Talk about a shocker.
With his sudden resignation comes speculation. NFL speculation.
Although he stated he's taking time off to focus on his family and life away from the field, you'd have to think the 46-year-old Meyer will be rumored to fill many NFL coaching vacancies as soon as this offseason.
The first and most obvious suggestion was that he'd follow his most prized recruit, Tim Tebow, to Denver, a place that is surely looking for long-term answer at quarterback and head coach.
But many ESPN sources have said, "No way."
I don't believe it.
Don't be surprised if Tebow is traded and Meyer comes as somewhat of a package deal. I could see him as an assistant for Bill Belichick in New England.
Places like Carolina and Cincinnati are long-shots, but you never know.
The real question is, who fills his spot in Gainesville as the Gators head coach. Being University of Florida's head man is one of those "dream jobs" in college football we often hear about.
Jon Gruden was asked about University of Miami and promptly turned them down.
What about roaming the sidelines in the swamp? Life's a lot easier in Gainesville than it is in Miami these days. The nation's top recruits flock to Gainesville, and if you win your conference, you're playing for a national title.
A little more appealing, huh Jon?
