Urban Meyer: What Will Be His Next Move? Will He Join Tim Tebow?

Gabe ZaldivarDec 8, 2010

Urban Meyer steps down as the Florida Gators head coach. One of college's most successful coaches has resigned.

Florida's loss has the media abuzz of his next stop. Meyer contends that his decision was familial based.

Meyer said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am a fierce competitor to my core. At this time in my life, however, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field."

The Gators coach will continue his duties until the Outback Bowl where he hopes to go out in style. One of the sports best leaving his post has to lead somewhere. No one knows where his next stop will be, but I have an idea.

8. Retirement

Urban Meyer took a leave of absence around this time last season. At the time he was suffering from chest pains and exhaustion. The sport that he excelled at coaching may have been too much for him at the time.

This really may be the time that the 47 year old chooses to walk away from the sport. Having another taxing season may have taken it's final toll. Urban Meyer may very well be done with football.

7. Carolina Panthers

John Fox is in his final year of his contract as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. This is not the kind of season you want to have in your final year. It goes without saying that the horrid looking Panthers will have a new coach next season. Urban Meyer would not have to travel far to set up shop as head coach of the Panthers.

I want to stress that Urban Meyer loves a challenge. Well there is no bigger challenge in football than making a winner out of the bunch in Carolina.

6. San Francisco 49ers

The Mike Singletary era of 49ers football may be at a bitter end. The 49ers have just wasted the greatest chance to walk on through to the playoffs. The NFC West was dismal this season. But try as they might, the Niners just could not get it going.

So why not leave, the Florida faithful for the team of Jerry Rice and Joe Montana? The 49ers are Bill Walsh and Super Bowl titles. They very well could be the team of Urban Meyer.

5. Dallas Cowboys

Meyer is one of the fiercest competitors in the business. He has never shied away from a challenge. This time in his life will be no different. There are a plethora of openings in the NFL this off season.

There is none more prestigious or more difficult to crack than the Dallas job. It is very uncertain that Jason Garrett will hold onto the job in Dallas. Jerry Jones will be best served taking a look at the college genius Urban Meyer. It is clear that nothing else he has tried has worked. I think there is enough money in his pocket to woo Meyer.

College Game Day could use a man who knows what he is talking about. What better way to continue to get paid what your worth and not have the added pressure of wins and losses.

Urban Meyer would be a star at breaking down the other team's strategies. He has been doing it to great success at Florida for years. This may be the cushy job he needs right now.

3. Take a Few Years Off

Granted, this is a perfect time in the to make yourself available to the NFL. There are so many jobs opening up that is has become a coach's market, well a desirable coach's market.

But the demands of coaching have become too much for Meyer. Perhaps a few years off is just what the doctor ordered. As the best coach in the BCS-era of college football, he will have no trouble finding a job when the mood strikes him. At 47, he is a spring chicken. Joe Paterno is 147 years old and he is still coaching.

2. Denver Broncos

The coincidence is almost too much to ignore. One week the job opens in Denver, the next Urban Meyer steps down from the Florida Gators coaching job he has held for six seasons.

The biggest tie he has to the Broncos is his star pupil, Tim Tebow. The best season both have ever had was the 2008 campaign that netted them both a national title for Florida. With the storied franchise in Denver again on the outside looking in at the post season, a regime change is in order.

The Broncos could use even a small amount of the success that Meyer brought to the Florida Gators.

He did the same thing last season. He stated that he would retire only to change that to a leave of absence. Urban Meyer is a competitor that cannot leave the game completely. He will stay with the team until the Outback Bowl against Penn State.

That amount of time may afford him a vision of what he will miss. Guys like Urban Meyer cannot fully walk away. While the losses may take their toll on his psyche, the joys of coaching the Gators may be too much for him to ignore.
