BCS: How Long Will It Be Allowed To Continue?

Chuck JamiesonDec 8, 2010

Some things never change.

Each year about this time, debate ensues about how a national champion is determined in college football.

The non-BCS teams and college presidents claim how unfair the system is to them.

The BCS representatives declare how more deserving they are.

In the end, a computer and a handful of "experts" in a conference room somewhere determine who gets an opportunity to be national champion, not the people who should, the teams themselves and not where it should be decided, between the white lines of a football field.

When Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman missed his chip shot field goal that would have beaten Nevada and preserving their undefeated season, the next sound heard across the country was the collective sigh of relief coming from the BCS committee, as if to say, "Whew, we won't have Boise State to worry about this year."

There is something inherently wrong with a system that arbitrarily knights those who are worthy and relegates others to the sidelines for no other reason than the name of the institution on their jersey.

TCU is an excellent example.  No one has come close to beating them this year, yet they have never been in the conversation for a national champion.  They were given no shot.

The BCS would tell them they should be happy to just get a BCS Bowl bid. When they move to the Big East, suddenly, they will be "legitimate" and in the contention for a national championship.

What changed?  Probably not their strength of schedule.

Now we hear there was a "discrepancy" in the BCS computer system and Boise State was raised to 10th and LSU lowered to 11th.

Fortunately, this error had no real bearing on the national championship outcome, but it might next time.

It points out, again, the need to scrap the BCS and establish a just and fair playoff system where ANY school in FBS has a shot of winning the national title when the season begins and where their worthiness is determined where it really matters, on the field.

Who plays for the title "National Champion" should be earned and determined between the lines of a football field and not by computers and committees.

If Ohio State is really better than Boise State, they should have to prove it on the field of play.  If TCU is really inferior to Auburn or Oregon, that should have to be proved rather than assumed.
