Tennessee Fans Might Just Revolt

Donald FincherSep 1, 2008

I wrote an article earlier in the year stating that the Tennessee AD made a move that should have made Volunteer fans storm the gates but certainly had the rest of the SEC schools fans pretty happy.  The AD, in essence, gave Phil Fulmer a lifetime contract.

They got together over beers and brats at Phil's lake house and dreamed up a contract so favorable to Phil that you would have to almost assume that there were kickbacks to Hamilton involved.  The contract basically called for Phil to get an auto-pilot raise and extension anytime he wins 8 games.

For those keeping score at home, that would mean Tennessee handles their four non-conference teams and then goes 4-4 in conference and Phil clocks an automatic extension while getting a raise to do it.

And, even though it's supposed to be eight games of the 12 regular season games, we all know that if Tennessee goes 7-5, they will get a patsy bowl in which they will most likely win and, tada, magically Phil reaches eight wins.  Who really cares what month it happened in, right?

I mean, if UT wins eight in the regular season and loses the bowl or if they win seven in the regular season and win the bowl, it still results in an 8-5 total.  I'm sure that will be how it's spun.

Well, this year, it just got a bit harder.  With the loss to UCLA, Phil now has to win his other three non-conference games and go 5-3 in the conference.  What if he doesn't, you ask?  I think we're about to see.

Tennessee will not be favored in the Florida, Georgia, Auburn or Bama games.  If those games go to the favorites (and at this point there really isn't much reason to suspect that they won't), then Phil is sitting at five losses.

What would an upset by Kentucky, South Carolina or Vandy mean?  Hamilton would have to act then...right?

If he doesn't, he might be protecting Phil's job at the expense of his own.
