BCS Rankings: Why Wisconsin Would Beat Every Team in the Top 25
The Wisconsin Badgers finished off their 2010 regular season last week with a 70-23 whipping of the Northwestern Wildcats.
As it sits, the Badgers are currently in the driver's seat for a Rose Bowl berth, as they possess the highest BCS ranking in the Big Ten.
The Badgers have finished off their opponents in grand style, scoring 83, 48 and 70 points in consecutive games.
Yes, it was against Indiana, Michigan and Northwestern respectively. However, the Badgers have looked virtually unstoppable since a win over Purdue back in the first week of November.
How would the Badgers fare against the rest of the BCS Top 25?
Here is one reason the Badgers would beat every team in the BCS...
25. Northern Illinois Huskies (10-2)
1 of 24
Level of competition
Don't get me wrong—NIU is a solid football team. However, they have not played a team with the level of talent the Badgers bring to the table. Illinois and Minnesota are not even close.
24. West Virginia Mountaineers (8-3)
2 of 24
Big East
Enough said.
23. Arizona Wildcats (7-4)
3 of 24
Inconsistency
Arizona has been an interesting team this season, at times pounding its opponents and at other times looking like an eight-year-old flag football team.
22. Mississippi State Bulldogs (8-4)
4 of 24
J.J. Watt and co.
The Bulldogs are 90th in the country in passing offense, and the Badgers have been solid against the run this season, allowing only seven touchdowns on the ground and 131 yards per game.
21. Utah Utes (10-2)
5 of 24
Utah is overrated
After rising to No. 5 in the country by beating, well, no one, the Utes plunged back to reality against TCU and Notre Dame.
If they played Wisconsin, they would be steamrolled.
20. Florida State Seminoles (9-3)
6 of 24
Experience
The Seminoles seem to have it together, but then they lose it. Against the one team in the current Top 25 the 'Noles have played, they were shellacked by Oklahoma.
That experience would be similar to playing a tough Wisconsin team.
19. Alabama Crimson Tide (9-3)
7 of 24
Turnovers
The Tide fumbled their way out of an Iron Bowl victory against Auburn, and Wisconsin is an opportunistic defense, taking five away from Northwestern last week...
18. Texas A&M Aggies (9-3)
8 of 24
Mike Sherman
Sherman is a good coach, don't get me wrong, but there is no way he and his staff could match up game plans with the Badgers' coaching staff.
The Badgers have repeatedly out-coached their opponents this season.
17. Nevada Wolf Pack (11-1)
9 of 24
They can't beat the first place team in their conference
That's right—even with the victory over BSU last weekend, if Hawai'i beats UNLV this weekend, the Warriors will win the WAC. No way the Wolf Pack hangs with the Big Ten's best.
16. South Carolina Gamecocks (9-3)
10 of 24
Badgers' experience
The Badgers are deep and talented, but most of all they boast experience all the way across the board.
In a game against the Gamecocks, the Badgers would get hit in the mouth by the SC running game, but their experience would enable them to recover and punch back.
15. Virginia Tech Hokies (10-2)
11 of 24
ACC
No further comment.
14. Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-2)
12 of 24
Too much defense
In a game featuring two prolific offensive teams, the team that stops the other the most wins. The Badger defense would find a way to stop the Cowboys, especially with the Badgers' improved secondary at this point in the season.
13. Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-2)
13 of 24
Wisconsin's mobile quarterback experience
The Badgers would face the mobile Taylor Martinez. However, after facing Denard Robinson and Terrelle Pryor, the defensive squad would have ample experience to game-plan for the elusive Mr. Martinez.
12. Missouri Tigers (10-2)
14 of 24
Scoring efficiency
While the Tigers are a very stout defensive team, checking in sixth at points allowed, the Badgers are one of the most efficient scoring teams in the country and the highest scoring in the Big Ten. The Badgers would find ways to score, leaving Mizzou behind...
11. Boise State Broncos (10-1)
15 of 24
Kyle Brotzman
You see, in the Big Ten and other BCS conferences, the kickers tend to make field goals to win or tie the game...especially against an inferior opponent.
10. LSU Tigers (10-2)
16 of 24
Les Miles
The game would be close but would be given to the Badgers at the end by the "Mad Hatter" after a horrible case of clock mismanagement.
9. Oklahoma Sooners (10-2)
17 of 24
Time of possession
The Sooners put up a ton of yards. However, the Badgers' style of grind it out, ball control football would win out in the end.
8. Michigan State Spartans (11-1)
18 of 24
Everybody's healthy
MSU is the only team that has beaten Wisconsin this season. However, when the Spartans beat UW, the Badgers lost starting defensive end J.J. Watt, tight end Lance Kendricks, wide receiver Nick Toon, wide receiver/return man David Gilreath and star running back John Clay for all or part of the game due to injury.
The Badgers have shown since then that, when healthy, they can compete with anybody.
7. Arkansas Razorbacks (10-2)
19 of 24
Improvement in secondary
The Badgers' secondary was looked at as the Achilles' heel of this team but has matured to the point where they are a solid secondary, forcing turnovers and making solid open field tackles.
This improvement would come in handy against Ryan Mallett and the high-powered Razorback offense.
6. Ohio State Buckeyes (11-1)
20 of 24
Toughness
The Badgers out-toughed the Buckeyes once this season and in a rematch would be able to do it again.
4. Stanford Cardinal (11-1)
21 of 24
Offensive line
The toughest test for the Badgers in the Top 25 would be the Cardinal. They are a very tough, very physical team and match up well against the Badgers.
However, the Badgers' O-line, averaging 320 pounds and 6'5" across the board, would wear out the Stanford front seven, resulting in a big day for the Badgers' running game.
3. TCU Horned Frogs (12-0)
22 of 24
Passing game
While TCU has had a stout defense this season, it has yet to meet a team with an offense as balanced as UW. Scott Tolzien would be able pick apart the Horned Frogs defense, leading the Badgers to a 10-point victory.
2. Oregon Ducks (11-0)
23 of 24
Slow down offense
In games against teams with hurry-up offenses this season, the Badgers have found ways to sustain repeated long drives and maintain ball control. By doing this, they have kept the offense off the field and worn down the defense. Against the Ducks, this strategy would be similarly effective.
1. Auburn Tigers (12-0)
24 of 24
Play defense
The days of SEC defensive dominance are long gone, and the Tigers have yet to face a team this season with the "hit 'em in the mouth" mentality that the Badgers and defensive coordinator Dave Doeren bring to the field.
The Badgers have also had some success containing mobile quarterbacks and would have an effective game plan for stopping Scam...I mean Cam Newton...
