In a Flash, WPS Puts WNY on the World Football Map With Franchise Aiming High

Elma, NY Meat Mogul Joe Sahlen took the podium at his company's sports park in this south Buffalo suburb to tell the story of how Buffalo and Western New York has joined the elite company of the world's six or seven best women's professional soccer clubs.

"Similar to most of the other WPS owners," Sahlen said, "It all started when my girls wanted to play soccer." The Owner of Sahlen Packing Company, makers of local favorite, Sahlen's Hot Dogs (the official hot dog of the Buffalo Bills) went on to say that his daughter Alexandra, a former soccer standout at Niagara University, got tired of commuting to Rochester to play for a minor league club there.

He decided to purchase a franchise in the United Soccer League's "W-League" for Alexandra, and after only two years won the league championship, undefeated, under the leadership of rookie Coach Aaran Lines.

After winning it all in the W-League, Sahlen explained, it was necessary to move up to the best league. "We never intended to remain a minor league operation," he said.

So Sahlen and his people contacted the expansion committee at Women's Professional Soccer and were offered a berth in 2012. However, they demanded an opportunity to enter the league in 2011 because he wanted to ride the momentum from the Buffalo Flash directly into the ultimate women's league. After vetting Sahlen carefully, WPS accepted his proffer, declaring that Sahlen had an excellent business plan and that they believed it would be successful in a league that has been struggling with franchise viability.

To maintain continuity, the nickname Flash was retained, and the influence of the Sahlen company logo was also retained. WPS partner, Puma, insisted that the logo include a medallion, so the original logo that was essentially the same as the Buffalo Flash W-league logo, was tweaked to Puma;s satisfaction. Then, in order to broaden the geographical fan base, the team name was changed from Buffalo Flash to Western New York Flash.

In other attempts at continuity, Sahlen named Lines his head coach, but added to his WPS competence by also bringing in former Chicago Red Stars (WPS) Head Coach Emma Hayes as a talent acquisition consultant.

Lines is an interesting story himself, having only coached for two years, all with Buffalo, after playing professionally internationally and finally in the top tier of minor league soccer in the United States. A stint at the Rochester Rhinos is where Lines met Alexandra Sahlen and the relationship developed from there.

Sahlen emphasized that his approach to staffing his expansion team is to shoot for the top from the beginning. The club could have claimed as many as 12 players from the WPS expansion draft but they only selected two: Atlanta Beat defender Kaley Fountain and Washington Freedom midfielder Beverly Goebel. The rest of the roster would be filled by as many as five of the best players from the W-League club, and otherwise, the best free agents available worldwide.

"Our intent is to put together an 'All-Star' caliber team," Sahlen declared. Coach Lines added later that "we have verbal commitments from a couple real impact players that we hope to be able to announce officially very soon."

"One to be announced as early as tomorrow, will be recognized as one of the world's most prolific strikers."

The first free agent signing is an indication of that kind of commitment to quality. Ashlyn Harris finished the 2010 season as starting keeper for the Washington Freedom and was third on the US Women's National Team depth chart at the goalie position. Harris was present for the roll-out and stated, "I'm thrilled to be in Buffalo. I love it here and this is going to be a fantastic team. This team is being built to win from the beginning and once we start winning, the fans will start coming."

The Flash will play at least half their matches at the new soccer specific venue in Rochester, Rhinos Stadium, home to the UPL's Rochester Rhinos. The facility seats 14,000, but only the lower level, about 8-9,000 seats will be open for Flash matches.

The club continues to consider venues in Buffalo as well, primarily focusing on All-High Stadium, or may decide to invest in expansion of the soccer-only facility at Niagara University, in order to maximize outreach to a Canadian fan base. The club will also give priority to signing Canadian players for the same purpose.
