BCS Rankings Week 14: Predicting How the Top 25 Will Change by Next Week
Just one more week to go before the BCS bowl games are solidified.
There have been some big winners, big losers and some teams who are just fine where they are.
Auburn is now No. 1 after its come-from-behind victory at Alabama. Oregon is No. 2 and is still undefeated. TCU is still No. 3 as an undefeated.
Boise State dropped a full seven spots to No. 11 after their 34-31 overtime loss against Nevada on Friday. It was the first time they had lost in their last two seasons.
But, despite all of this movement, we've still got another week left! I can't contain myself! The suspense!
Here are my predictions of how the Top 25 will change after next week's games.
25. Northern Illinois
1 of 25
Last week: NR
This week: 25
Previous game:71-3 win against Eastern Michigan
Next game: vs. Miami (OH)
Miami (OH) doesn't score a lot of points. Northern Illinois, obviously, does. The Huskies are 11th in the country in points per game, at 39.3, and it's not just because of their 71-point output last week. They scored 59 and 65 the two weeks before that.
Predicted ranking: 24
24. West Virginia
2 of 25
Last week: NR
This week: 24
Previous game: 35-10 win at Pittsburgh
Next game: vs. Rutgers
West Virginia was ranked in the Top 25 to start the season. It just took the program a while to get back there. The Mountaineers lost to LSU by five points and lost to Connecticut by three points in overtime. At 8-3, they're not a bad squad, and should have no problem with 4-7 Rutgers.
Predicted ranking: 23
23. Arizona
3 of 25
Last week: 21
This week: 23
Previous game: 48-29 loss at Oregon
Next game: vs. Arizona State
I see an upset in the making right here. Arizona State has lost by a combined six points to Wisconsin, USC and Stanford. They've played all these teams down to the wire. Arizona is coming off a gigantic loss to Oregon and they also got blown out by Stanford.
Predicted ranking: NR
22. Mississippi State
4 of 25
Last week: 25
This week: 22
Previous game: 31-23 win at Mississippi
Next game: Regular season over
Predicted ranking: 21
21. Florida State
5 of 25
Last week: 22
This week: 21
Previous game: 31-7 win vs. Florida
Next game: vs. No. 15 Virginia Tech
Although I love underdogs as a principle, I don't see any way FSU is going to beat Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech has won their last 10 games and are pumped to get into a bowl game.
Predicted ranking: 22
20. Utah
6 of 25
Last week: 20
This week: 20
Previous game: 17-16 win vs. Brigham Young
Next game: Regular season over
Predicted ranking:19
19. South Carolina
7 of 25
Last week: 18
This week: 19
Previous game: 29-7 win at Clemson
Next game: vs. No. 1 Auburn
The Gamecocks lost to Auburn 35-27 in Week 4. With the Tigers coming off an impressive win in Alabama and determined to get to the BCS championship game behind Cameron Newton, I'm gonna go out on a limb...and say Auburn destroys South Carolina. Okay, that's not going out on a limb, at all.
Predicted ranking: 20
18. Texas A&M
8 of 25
Last week: 17
This week: 18
Previous game: 24-17 win at Texas
Next game: Regular season over
Predicted ranking:18
17. Nevada
9 of 25
Last week: 19
This week: 17
Previous game: 34-31 OT win vs. No. 4 Boise State
Next game: at Louisiana Tech
Nevada was the first team in two years to beat Boise State on Nov. 26. They've played well all year. You can say whatever you want about the missed Boise State field goal that sent the game into overtime, Nevada played well enough to win that game. I'd be shocked if they lost to Louisiana Tech.
Predicted ranking: 17
16. Alabama
10 of 25
Last week: 11
This week: 16
Previous game: 28-27 loss vs. No. 2 Auburn
Next game: Regular season over
Tough loss to Auburn. Not the greatest way to go into a bowl game for a team with a lot of pride.
Predicted ranking: 16
15. Virginia Tech
11 of 25
Last week: 16
This week: 15
Previous game: 37-7 win vs. Virginia
Next game: vs. Florida State
Virginia Tech should roll through this game. The Hokies have been playing great football ever since their first two games. Ten straight wins and counting.
Predicted ranking: 15
14. Oklahoma State
12 of 25
Last week: 9
This week: 14
Previous game: 47-41 loss vs. No. 13 Oklahoma
Next game: Regular season over
Predicted ranking: 14
13. Nebraska
13 of 25
Last week: 15
This week: 13
Previous game: 45-17 win vs. Colorado
Next game: vs. No. 9 Oklahoma
At home, I'm giving this game to the Cornhuskers in an upset. Oklahoma's coming off a huge win against Oklahoma State, but don't forget Nebraska also beat Oklahoma State-scoring 51 points in the process—and also beat Missouri, who Oklahoma lost to. I think Taylor Martinez and Bo Pelini have moved on from their debacle against Texas A&M.
Predicted ranking: 9
12. Missouri
14 of 25
Last week: 14
This week: 12
Previous game: 35-7 win vs. Kansas
Next game: Regular season over
Predicted ranking: 13
11. Boise State
15 of 25
Last week: 4
This week: 11
Previous game: 34-31 OT loss at Nevada
Next game: vs. Utah State
I expect Kellen Moore and the Broncos to come out firing in their last game of the season after losing for the first time in two years to Nevada last week. Although I do believe what was being done to Boise State was a crime-ranked No. 4 after two years of going undefeated—the Nevada loss warrants a drop in the BCS rankings, albeit seven spots is a little harsh. I mean, they did beat Virginia Tech this year. I expect this to be a blowout game for the Broncos.
Predicted ranking: 11
10. LSU
16 of 25
Last week: 5
This week: 10
Previous game: 31-23 loss at Arkansas
Next game: Regular season over
Not a great way to end the regular season, but LSU will have no problem getting into a bowl game.
Predicted ranking: 10
9. Oklahoma
17 of 25
Last week: 13
This week: 9
Previous game: 47-41 win at No. 9 Oklahoma State
Next game: vs. No. 13 Nebraska
I think Oklahoma has a good chance to pull this one off in what will probably be one of the closest games of the week, but I'm giving this game to Nebraska based on their entire season, not on just the one (albeit uplifting) win against Oklahoma State.
Predicted ranking: 12
8. Michigan State
18 of 25
Last week: 10
This week: 8
Previous game: 28-22 win at Penn State
Next game: Regular season over
The Spartans shouldn't have any trouble getting into a bowl game.
Predicted ranking: 8
7. Arkansas
19 of 25
Last week: 12
This week: 7
Previous game: 31-23 win vs. LSU
Next game: Regular season over
What a way to end the season, eh? Arkansas should be fun to watch come bowl time.
Predicted ranking: 7
6. Ohio State
20 of 25
Last week: 8
This week: 6
Previous game: 37-7 win vs. Michigan
Next game: Regular season over
Beat Michigan in what turns out to be the game media and fans alike call for Wolverine coach Rich Rodriguez' head? Mission accomplished.
Predicted ranking: 6
5. Wisconsin
21 of 25
Last week: 7
This week: 5
Previous game: 70-23 win vs. Northwestern
Next game: Regular season over
Nothing like scoring 70 points to finish off the regular season. Wisconsin's for real.
Predicted ranking: 5
4. Stanford
22 of 25
Last week: 6
This week: 4
Previous game: 38-0 win vs. Oregon State
Next game: Regular season over
Shutting out a previously ranked team has got to feel good. That No. 4 ranking has got to feel swell, too.
Predicted ranking: 4
3. TCU
23 of 25
Last week: 3
This week: 3
Previous game: 66-17 win at New Mexico
Next game: Regular season over
Predicted ranking: 3
2. Oregon
24 of 25
Last week: 1
This week: 2
Previous game: 48-29 win vs. No. 21 Arizona
Next game: at Oregon State
Their 48-29 win against Arizona was only trumped by Auburn's 28-27 come-from-behind victory at Alabama. Can't really fault the BCS for flipping Oregon and Auburn. Oregon State is 5-6 and although the Beavers have had wins against Arizona and USC, they aren't in the same league (figuratively) as Oregon.
Predicted ranking: 2
1. Auburn
25 of 25
Last week: 2
This week: 1
Previous game: 28-27 OT win at No. 11 Alabama
Next game: vs. No. 19 South Carolina
Nothing like coming back from a 24-0 deficit to go into the SEC championship game. South Carolina is a decent team, but not a great team. A loss here for Auburn would be a major disappointment.
Predicted ranking: 1
