BCS Rankings Week 14: Predicting How the Top 25 Will Change by Next Week

Ryan RudnanskyNov 29, 2010

Just one more week to go before the BCS bowl games are solidified.

There have been some big winners, big losers and some teams who are just fine where they are.

Auburn is now No. 1 after its come-from-behind victory at Alabama. Oregon is No. 2 and is still undefeated. TCU is still No. 3 as an undefeated.

Boise State dropped a full seven spots to No. 11 after their 34-31 overtime loss against Nevada on Friday. It was the first time they had lost in their last two seasons.

But, despite all of this movement, we've still got another week left! I can't contain myself! The suspense!

Here are my predictions of how the Top 25 will change after next week's games.

25. Northern Illinois

1 of 25

Last week: NR

This week: 25

Previous game:71-3 win against Eastern Michigan

Next game: vs. Miami (OH)

Miami (OH) doesn't score a lot of points. Northern Illinois, obviously, does. The Huskies are 11th in the country in points per game, at 39.3, and it's not just because of their 71-point output last week. They scored 59 and 65 the two weeks before that.

Predicted ranking: 24

24. West Virginia

2 of 25

Last week: NR

This week: 24

Previous game: 35-10 win at Pittsburgh

Next game: vs. Rutgers

West Virginia was ranked in the Top 25 to start the season. It just took the program a while to get back there. The Mountaineers lost to LSU by five points and lost to Connecticut by three points in overtime. At 8-3, they're not a bad squad, and should have no problem with 4-7 Rutgers.

Predicted ranking: 23

23. Arizona

3 of 25
EUGENE, OR - NOVEMBER 26: Defensive end Brandon Bair #88 of the Oregon Ducks hits quarterback Nick Foles #8 of the Arizona Wildcats in the fourth quarter of the game at Autzen Stadium on November 26, 2010 in Eugene, Oregon. The Ducks won the game 48-29. (

Last week: 21

This week: 23

Previous game: 48-29 loss at Oregon

Next game: vs. Arizona State

I see an upset in the making right here. Arizona State has lost by a combined six points to Wisconsin, USC and Stanford. They've played all these teams down to the wire. Arizona is coming off a gigantic loss to Oregon and they also got blown out by Stanford.

Last week: 22

This week: 21

Previous game: 31-7 win vs. Florida

Next game: vs. No. 15 Virginia Tech

Although I love underdogs as a principle, I don't see any way FSU is going to beat Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech has won their last 10 games and are pumped to get into a bowl game.

Last week: 18

This week: 19

Previous game: 29-7 win at Clemson

Next game: vs. No. 1 Auburn

The Gamecocks lost to Auburn 35-27 in Week 4. With the Tigers coming off an impressive win in Alabama and determined to get to the BCS championship game behind Cameron Newton, I'm gonna go out on a limb...and say Auburn destroys South Carolina. Okay, that's not going out on a limb, at all.

Last week: 19

This week: 17

Previous game: 34-31 OT win vs. No. 4 Boise State

Next game: at Louisiana Tech

Nevada was the first team in two years to beat Boise State on Nov. 26. They've played well all year. You can say whatever you want about the missed Boise State field goal that sent the game into overtime, Nevada played well enough to win that game. I'd be shocked if they lost to Louisiana Tech.

Last week: 16

This week: 15

Previous game: 37-7 win vs. Virginia

Virginia Tech should roll through this game. The Hokies have been playing great football ever since their first two games. Ten straight wins and counting.

Last week: 15

This week: 13

Previous game: 45-17 win vs. Colorado

Next game: vs. No. 9 Oklahoma

At home, I'm giving this game to the Cornhuskers in an upset. Oklahoma's coming off a huge win against Oklahoma State, but don't forget Nebraska also beat Oklahoma State-scoring 51 points in the process—and also beat Missouri, who Oklahoma lost to. I think Taylor Martinez and Bo Pelini have moved on from their debacle against Texas A&M.

Predicted ranking: 9

12. Missouri

Last week: 4

This week: 11

Previous game: 34-31 OT loss at Nevada

Next game: vs. Utah State

I expect Kellen Moore and the Broncos to come out firing in their last game of the season after losing for the first time in two years to Nevada last week. Although I do believe what was being done to Boise State was a crime-ranked No. 4 after two years of going undefeated—the Nevada loss warrants a drop in the BCS rankings, albeit seven spots is a little harsh. I mean, they did beat Virginia Tech this year. I expect this to be a blowout game for the Broncos.

Last week: 5

This week: 10

Not a great way to end the regular season, but LSU will have no problem getting into a bowl game.

9. Oklahoma

17 of 25
STILLWATER, OK - NOVEMBER 27: Quarterback Landry Jones #12 of the Oklahoma Sooners looks for an open receiver against the Oklahoma State Cowboys at Boone Pickens Stadium on November 27, 2010 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Sooners beat the Cowboys 47-41. (

Last week: 13

This week: 9

Previous game: 47-41 win at No. 9 Oklahoma State

Next game: vs. No. 13 Nebraska

I think Oklahoma has a good chance to pull this one off in what will probably be one of the closest games of the week, but I'm giving this game to Nebraska based on their entire season, not on just the one (albeit uplifting) win against Oklahoma State.

Predicted ranking: 12

8. Michigan State

Last week: 1

This week: 2

Previous game: 48-29 win vs. No. 21 Arizona

Next game: at Oregon State

Their 48-29 win against Arizona was only trumped by Auburn's 28-27 come-from-behind victory at Alabama. Can't really fault the BCS for flipping Oregon and Auburn. Oregon State is 5-6 and although the Beavers have had wins against Arizona and USC, they aren't in the same league (figuratively) as Oregon.

Predicted ranking: 2

1. Auburn

Last week: 2

This week: 1

Previous game: 28-27 OT win at No. 11 Alabama

Next game: vs. No. 19 South Carolina

Nothing like coming back from a 24-0 deficit to go into the SEC championship game. South Carolina is a decent team, but not a great team. A loss here for Auburn would be a major disappointment.
