College Football Rankings: Who Is Overrated in Week 14 Coaches and AP Polls?

Tom KinslowNov 28, 2010

College football rankings came out today, and it's time to break down the polls and figure out who's ranked a little bit higher than they should be.

There's plenty of debate every time a poll comes out, and this week is no different. Inside are 10 teams who should be ranked a little bit lower. Any thoughts? Leave them below.

No. 10: South Carolina

1 of 10
GAINESVILLE, FL - NOVEMBER 13: Stephen Garcia #5 of the South Carolina Gamecocks rushes for a touchdown against Will Hill #10 of the Florida Gators during a game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on November 13, 2010 in Gainesville, Florida. The Gamecocks beat

I like South Carolina, don't get me wrong. I think they're a good team, but I don't think they're better than Texas A&M.

The Aggies are rolling and have won six in a row. It's close, but I'd put Texas A&M ahead of the Gamecocks in the coaches poll. The Aggies have beaten some good teams in that stretch, and even though South Carolina is playing for a conference title, it's more about its division than anything else.

It's a good debate, and I won't complain too much about it.

No. 9: West Virginia

I don't really get how West Virginia is ranked and Connecticut isn't, to be honest.

I mean, I know the Huskies have had some bad losses this year, but if they're in the driver's seat in the Big East and the Mountaineers aren't, it doesn't seem right that West Virginia is ranked in the polls and the Huskies are unranked.

If any team is going to be ranked, it should be Connecticut.

No. 8: Hawaii

Hawaii beat New Mexico State, but that's not why the Warriors are in the AP poll this week.

The Warriors are the only team to beat Nevada, who beat Boise State on Friday night. Hawaii is 9-3 with losses to USC, Boise State and Colorado. Not exactly the best resume in the world. But that win over the Wolfpack gets them in.

Not a good look to put them in based on a win from October.

No. 7: Central Florida

Central Florida is ranked 25th in the coaches poll, and I'm not exactly sure why.

The Knights are 9-3 and have put a hurting on some of their opponents this year, but UCF lost to NC State, Kansas State and Southern Miss. And this is the 25th best team in the country? I don't think so. I know they have put up some gaudy numbers, but c'mon.

Looking at box scores and records don't mean anything. UCF is not worthy of being in the polls.

No. 6: Alabama

5 of 10

The only issue I have with Alabama's ranking is that it's above South Carolina's.

The Gamecocks beat the Crimson Tide this year, and there's no reason that they should be below Alabama in any poll, and the media messed up in putting the Crimson Tide above South Carolina in this week's poll. I know the Crimson Tide have a better resume, but the Gamecocks are playing for the conference title.

I just don't think it's right. At least the coaches got that right.

No. 5: Utah

6 of 10
SAN DIEGO - NOVEMBER 20: The Utah Utes get ready to take the field for the game with the San Diego State Aztecs at Qualcomm Stadium on November 20, 2010 in San Diego, California. Utah won 38-34. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

To be honest, I don't think Utah should even be ranked.

The Utes were blown out by TCU and then lost to Notre Dame, who quite frankly stinks, no matter what happened against USC, which isn't even that good of a win anyway. The Fighting Irish lost to Tulsa but somehow beat Utah.

That's all you need to know about the Utes' resume.

No. 4: Ohio State

7 of 10
IOWA CITY, IA - NOVEMBER 20: Quarterback Terrelle Pryor #2 of the Ohio State Buckeyes talks with teammates in the huddle during the play against the University of Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium on November 20, 2010 in Iowa City, Iowa. Ohio State won 20

Let's play a game. It's called "Find the Impressive Win on Ohio State's Resume."

Was it the win against Miami? Nope. Was it the win against Iowa? Not even close. There isn't one good win in the bunch, and when the Buckeyes played a truly good team, they lost to Wisconsin earlier this year, and lost pretty handily.

The Buckeyes aren't the best team in the Big Ten, and I don't think they're  that much better than Michigan State, even though the Spartans lost to Iowa. At least Michigan State beat someone worth anything even if they struggled this year at times.

The transitive property doesn't always work, but Michigan State beat Wisconsin and lost to Iowa. Ohio State lost to Wisconsin but beat Iowa. You can see how the voters got it the way they did, but I think the win over the Badgers outweighs the loss to the Hawkeyes.

No. 3: Boise State

8 of 10
BOISE, ID - NOVEMBER 19: Kellen Moore #11 of the Boise State Broncos passes against the Fresno State Bulldogs at Bronco Stadium on November 19, 2010 in Boise, Idaho. (Photo by Otto Kitsinger III/Getty Images)

I was rooting for Boise State to make the national championship game, but with the loss to Nevada, the Broncos should have dropped further.

The Wolfpack are no slouch, but the Broncos' resume is not better than LSU's at this point. Had Boise State won out, you can make a case, but now with a loss, the Tigers have to be ranked higher than the Broncos at this point.

It's a mistake to have the Tigers below, even with the loss to Arkansas.

No. 2: Nevada

9 of 10
COLUMBIA, MO - SEPTEMBER 13: Vai Taua #34 the Nevada Wolf Pack carries the ball during the first half of the game against the Missouri Tigers on September 13, 2008 at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

Nevada had a big win over Boise State, but I think the polls were too reactionary in ranking the Wolfpack.

I don't think the Wolfpack are better than teams like Texas A&M or Oklahoma State regardless of the records of these teams. Nevada is a good team, but beating the Broncos was a bit more about luck than actual merit.

I know some think differently, but I would have the Woflpack lower.

No. 1: Virginia Tech

10 of 10

Virginia Tech hasn't really beaten anyone this year, but somehow, the Hokies are ranked above teams with actual resumes.

The ACC isn't that good this year, and blowout wins over inferior opponents within the conference aren't really impressing a lot of people. The funny thing is the Hokies will likely draw the Big East winner in a bowl game and blow that team out of the water.

The only thing is, the Big East is the worst major conference in the country.
