College Football Week 13: Top 10 Shockers To Make the BCS Even Messier

Gabe ZaldivarNov 24, 2010

College Football Week 13 is here and I am ready to blow your mind. Seriously, do not expect to have your mind when you are done with this one.

As you can do every week, expect some upsets. It is the nature of college football. With so much parity abounding at every corner, there are bound to be elite teams to fall to lesser ranked opponents. This will be an extreme week of football. The top teams are clinging by a thread in the schedule department.

Many of the top five have their toughest opponent this week. So here is a list of ten upsets that will keep you fat and happy this Thanksgiving weekend.

10. Maryland Over #23 North Carolina State

1 of 10

Prediction: North Carolina State 35, Maryland 42 OT

North Carolina State has two strikes against them in this one. They are horrible on the road and they suffer at the hands of ACC division rivals. This game poses both of those challenges.

I also think Danny O'Brien is yet to show his best stuff. I expect him to have his best game at home to end his freshman season.

Impact: If Maryland wins they would hopscotch over NC State in the conference standings. Not only that, but they very well could find themselves in the top 25 for the first time this year. Now wouldn't that be something? NC State, yeah they would be gone.

9. BYU Over #20 Utah

2 of 10
LAS VEGAS - DECEMBER 22: Manase Tonga #11 of the Brigham Young University Cougars celebrates as he scores a touchdown against the Oregon State Beavers in the fourth quarter of the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium December 22, 2009 in Las Vegas, N

 Prediction: BYU 24, Utah 20

Utah has been exposed for what they are, a mediocre team that can't hang in the top 25. BYU beat San Diego State handily. That is the same team that almost gave the Utes their third loss of the season.

Utah is a very porous team that is itching for yet another upset. BYU has enough of a passing game to move the ball along and shock Utah.

Impact: Utah would be trounced from the top 25 rankings. It wouldn't be a moment too soon. Utah got fat off bad teams to start the year and they were finally undressed by the much better TCU Horned Frogs a couple weeks back.

8. Florida Over #22 Florida State

Prediction: Florida 28, Florida State 25

The Seminoles have taken their eye off the ball before this game. They dropped two in a row to North Carolina State and North Carolina. After, it left their fans wondering, what was that all about?

I'll tell you. Their defense tired, or gave up. In both cases, the Seminoles allowed their opponents to massage their way back into the game. You cannot do that and survive against the Gators.

Impact: The Seminoles can say good bye to the top 25. For the Gators, a horrible season will have been salvaged simply by ruining the Seminoles' party.

7. Clemson Over #18 South Carolina

Prediction: South Carolina 13, Clemson 17

I know what you are going to say. Clemson does not stand a chance. Well that was true a couple of weeks ago when they took down then #25 North Carolina State. This happens to be a huge rivalry game as well. We know the blueprint for success goes right out the window during those games.

Clemson is very good at home. They almost beat Auburn in overtime in week three and took down NC State on November 6th. Rest assured, Clemson will make this game sloppy enough to contend.

Impact: A fall of this magnitude would seem almost destined for the Gamecocks. They have flirted with disaster all year. They have two losses against ranked opponents and then a real stinker in defeat against Kentucky. I feel like they are meant for mediocrity this year.

6. #13 Oklahoma Over #9 Oklahoma State

Prediction: Oklahoma 27, Oklahoma State 24

Landry Jones, Ryan Broyles, DeMarco Murray—the Sooners have too many weapons to let this season slip away. They can still make a stand in this rivalry game.

I feel as though the Cowboys have lucked themselves into the #9 spot. They had a great game against Nebraska, a team that has fallen on rough times since. So they might have got a good team at a bad time in the Cornhuskers. But a loss is still a loss. Other than that, who have they played?

The Sooners are simply a better team that should win this one.

Impact: A win here could be very fortuitous. The top 10 is riddled with potential upsets. Oklahoma could very well get as high as the top five with an upset of the Cowboys.

5. Texas Over #17 Texas A&M

Prediction: Texas A&M 24, Texas 35

Texas has had one of its worst seasons in recent memory. The players lack concentration and motivation. They were so bad that Mack Brown, who is more of an institution than a head coach, is on the hot seat. Believe me that the fans and players view this game as the last vestige in salvaging the season.

I fully expect the Longhorns to play to the form we expected at the beginning of the season. They will also get a boost from the home crowd.

Impact: This would kill the Aggies's season. They would fall from the top 25 and be relegated to some back woods bowl no one cares about.

4. #11 Alabama Over #2 Auburn

7 of 10

Prediction: Auburn 17, Alabama 24

Ah, the Iron Bowl. Where men become men and seasons go straight into the toilet. Auburn has remained relatively unscathed all year. That will come crashing down at this season's biggest rivalry game. Alabama has had a tough road and have one huge plus in their corner. They are playing with house money.

The Crimson Tide—for once in the Iron Bowl—don't need the win. Cam Newton and his scandal and the rest of the Auburn program desperately need to win this one. Desperation is no way to start the bowl season.

Impact: This would be a titanic loss for Auburn. Alabama would have the swagger of taking the rivalry game and would end the season in the top 10. Meanwhile, Auburn would plummet to a #9 team or even lower.

3. #19 Nevada Over #4 Boise State

8 of 10

Prediction: Boise State 28, Nevada 35

This game will be a volatile one. Both teams pose a significant threat on offense. Boise State may be one of the top teams in the nation, but they have not seen anything like Colin Kaepernick and the pistol offense. It's like the wildcat on PCP. The Broncos secondary will be working overtime in this game.

Nevada will keep it close until the end. At that point, the pressure of a season slipping away will benefit Nevada.

Impact: Boise State will lose a lot of credibility on this one. They already have faced little to no threats on their schedule. To lose to a #19 team now would be the same as lying to us college fans about how good you really are. Boise State would fall from the graces of the top 10.

2. #12 Arkansas Over #5 LSU

9 of 10

Prediction: LSU 17, Arkansas 24

The Razorbacks have learned their lesson in their pivotal losses to Alabama and Auburn. They have seen what it takes to get past a tough defense. I expect great things from Ryan Mallet at home on Saturday.

On the flip side, LSU has looked very susceptible in big games this year. They have barely eeked out the win against ranked opponents. This will be another tight one that will unfortunately not go the Tigers' way.

Impact: With so many closely pitted matches, the standings are bound to get jumbled. This one in particular muddles the top 10 to no end. Essentially, the Razorbacks could hop over the Tigers by literally one spot. I could very easily see Arkansas at 10 and LSU at 11 on Sunday night.

1. Oregon State Over #6 Stanford

Prediction: Oregon State 29, Stanford 27

Shocked? Well you should be. That's the title of this article. I want you good and flabbergasted for this one.

The Beavers are one of the more seasoned teams in college football. They have played four ranked opponents before this game. They beat both USC and Arizona. They still have to play Stanford and Oregon. No rest for the weary indeed. They lost but gave good runs to Boise State and TCU. Stanford should not rest on these guys.

Impact: This would be a huge upset for Stanford at home. Their magical season would be lost and I am guessing so to would Andrew Luck's Heisman.
