If OU-OSU Bedlam Results In Big 12 South Three-Way Tie, Will Banners Fly?
Will banners fly?
If Oklahoma can beat Oklahoma State at Stillwater this Saturday the possibility exists for a three-way tie in the Big 12 South between Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.ย
When three-way ties occur in the Big 12 South, someone feels slighted. Two teams will not be happy. The winner will be picked by head-to-head followed by highest BCS points. Sometimes the BCS point differential is feather thin.

The last time this occurred in 2008, Texas tried to lobby the voters and the computers by flying banners over Lewis Field.
It may happen again.
If OSU wins, it's game over, no argument. However, if OU wins, the Texas Aggies will argue they beat OU on the field and may try to lobby the voters.
We may see big banners flying overhead in Stillwater.
You're laughing, right? You're saying that couldn't happen. No fans will spend $5000 to $10,000 on aircraft banners just to influence voters.
Yeah, they did. They might again. If you're scratching your eyeballs in disbelief let me show you this Silliman on Sports story from 2008. There were actual Banner Wars. Total Hilarity. Yes, the below story is historical. Yes, you have to remember the context of 2008. It could happen again.
Banner Wars
ย The skies were aliveโฆwith messages.
During the Bedlam game between OU and OSU in Stillwater, Oklahoma, small planes were flying over Lewis Field with banners. One read โ45-35. SETTLED ON A NEUTRAL FIELDโ.ย Shortly afterward another plane flew over with a banner reading โ39-33โ.
The first banner was paid for by University of Texas fans at a cost of over $7000. Supposedly, the idea was to influence voters in the BCS to sway the Longhorns into the Big 12 Championship game. Unfortunately, for the UT fans, computers donโt read banners.
Then just the other day another banner flew over Austin. This one read โMACK, QUIT YOUR WHINING, U KNEW THE RULES.โ Everyone assumes Oklahoma University fans paid for this banner. However, Texas Tech fans are claiming responsibility and the pilot of the aerial banner service thought his customers were Texas alums.
All we know is THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS!ย We can see the value of a little aerial advertising.ย Itโs a sign, even in these recessionary times, that capitalism is still alive.
It wasnโt so long ago when they couldnโt even fly over stadiums for fear the pilots might be terrorists. Now, theyโre trying to influence who wins championships.ย ย
So far, the warring banner flyers have been stationed in Austin and Lubbock. Texas Tech is in the fray because every time Mack Brown lines up another ESPN interview he always forgets to mention Texas Tech.
It burns Tech fans Mack wants to negate Techโs victory over Texas because Tech lost so badly to Oklahoma. And to them, no matter how Mack frames it, the logic doesnโt work.
We hate to say it, but in the Big 12 Championship game there may even be more banners. We heard Texas Tech fans may have a banner reading โMACK CONVINCED ME NOV 1ST DOESNโT EXISTโฆ CAN I HAVE YOUR BIRTHDAY?โ
That was told to us by a guy named Coby.ย Casey sent us another one: โTHE GOOD 65-21, THE BAD 45-35, THE FORGOTTEN 39-33โ. Another one suggested โ.935 to .922. SETTLED ON A NEUTRAL COMPUTER.โย
If that one flew over, know it was paid for by Sooner fans.
How far will they go? Will people try to punish Mack Brown for his excessive lobbying?
Will we see banners like โHEY MACK!! JEFF TEDFORD CALLED. HE SAID โQUIT YOUR WHINING.โ?
This was sent in by our friend Buttermaker who says Jeff Tedford, coach of the California Bears, never forgave Mack for his 2004 lobbying which propelled the Longhorns into the Rose Bowl and shut out the Bears. At the time of Mackโs lobbies, Texas trailed California by .0013 in the BCS.ย ย ย
Like we said, the whole banner wars thing is overblown. Weโre sure companies like Aerial Banners Inc. love it. It helps pay for the 75 hours of training required to be a banner pilot. Weโre just not sure how much it helps. If it worked, Ron Paul would be president.
If it worked, Larry Coker at Miami would have been fired two years before he was. If it worked, Mary would have married Ronald.ย Itโs not a good idea. Just like the bumper sticker on my proctologistโs car is not a good idea, the one that reads โTAILGATE ME NOW AND WAIT UNTIL I GET YOU IN MY OFFICE!โ Yes, it may inhibit drivers from tailgating his car, howeverโฆ itโs not good for business.
